filter too strong?

i hav a 2ft by 1ft and 1 and a half ft high tank. i was sold a fluval 3... is that too big a filter or is it ok??? one of my friends said i should only hav a fluval 2? the fish dont seem too annoyed by the filter only if they directly swim into the line of the water coming out. i had 2 guppies, 2mollies and a swordtail and a powder blue dwarf gourami. the first nite i had them in the tank the swordtail wouldn't leave the gourami alone so i took him back the next morning and swaped him for another gourami the same as the other one... everything woz fine for next day but then the following nite one of the guppies died... it didn't seem to hav any problems or look ill, i came home and just found it lyin on the bottom of the tank.

do u think this has anything to do with the filter or is it to be expected for a few fish to die at the beginning?
