Hi,

I've got my 60 litre tank setup, tried my old internal and it was so loud i couldn't take it!

I'm going to buy another internal filter for this tank, but it has to be quiet (it's in my room) and suitable for a trio/pair of apisto and fry (don't want the fry getting sucked up!).

Can anyone suggest any please?

I have an eheim biofilter in my 30G tank and its really quiet, but i think the fry would get sucked up if i got same but a smaller size.

There will be a thin layer of black sand (to cover the glass) and a couple of java fern on driftwood.

thanks,
adam

Sponge filter?

I am using a small aqua one internal filter in my 35L and it's perfect. Also running one in a 55L too and it is just as effective. Best way to deal with fry being sucked up is to net the filters inlets.

Good luck with your project :)

I use a Hob(hang on back) filter with a dense car sponge over the intake. This works well for me and others!

Limiting the intake too much will put more strain on the motors though, so bare this in mind. Filter wool also works well, but it depends how your filter sucks water in. Mine are just through the sides so netting is pretty effective. Just use an old pair of your tights Adam.

lol, who told you about my tights ;-)

There's not really space on the back for a hang on the back filter and i think it would be noisier than an internal. I don't mind getting some kind of small sponge filter, but not sure it would be powerful enough for the adult trio too? i dont mind putting tights over a stronger filter, but i think the suction still might trap the fry against it and be too strong for them to get away.

...i guess i need to know what litre flow wouldn't be too powerful suck the fry against it, but still filter enough for a trio and fry?

You could get a small internal then use a dense sponge and some filter wool. Cover it all in tights and i reckon you would be ok. My HRP fry survived the internal external style filter on the 620, and it wasn't netted.

Do you have the option to let them breed then remove them? That would be a better option imo. if you could leave the parents in with them for a week or two then remove them this would be even better!

I going to use my APS 1000 in my 70. On the intake i have a large sponge from my rio350L that i will make a slit in it then over the intake like a sock :good:

Are you going for a breeding tank?

well at the moment everyone is in my community 30G. So i was really hoping to grow the fry out in the 60Litre tank and if i had to move anyone out, move the parents back into the community tank. I kind of want to see the parents looking after the fry, because i've never seen it before.

Do you know what brand internals are recomended? I probably will have to pack it with sponge and filter wool. I'm guessing a flow rate of 150-200L an hr would be ok??

My 120 Litre tank has a biopower internal which the website says turns over 280/750LitreHr, and i know this would be too strong

I use Aqua One internals, they're pretty cheap on ebay. Got mine for about £6 posted. (used) It has a flow rate of about 200 litres an hour.

yeah im trying to make it a breeding tank, they're breeding already in the community tank, but i'd like to see them raise a spawn.

Is the APS 1000 a filter? I can't find it online. or do you mean APS air pump which blows water flow through the sponge? sorry being dum!

is yours one of these? http://www.aquaone.co.uk/filter_internal.php

I dont get why there is a picture of two internals for the maxi range?

Yeah, but mine is an older model. Have a look on fleabay, you might get one cheap. I got this and a small dumpy 55w heater for about 10quid posted iirc.

Sorry APS stands for All pond Solutions. They do very cheap SUNSUN filets. I dont recomend them just saying that what im using as it spare.

I should have added more detail when asking about breeding. If your going to put them all in the same tank(parents and fry) your best off with bare bottom and some plant pot with java moss or jave fern.
If your going to be moving mum and dad out after the fish hit approx month you could do a nice planted tank scape
