Filter Suggestion - Suitable For Apisto Fry And Parents

Sorry APS stands for All pond Solutions. They do very cheap SUNSUN filets. I dont recomend them just saying that what im using as it spare.

I should have added more detail when asking about breeding. If your going to put them all in the same tank(parents and fry) your best off with bare bottom and some plant pot with java moss or jave fern.
If your going to be moving mum and dad out after the fish hit approx month you could do a nice planted tank scape

aha, so is this what you have? ...http://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/aquarium-1/aquarium-filters/internal-filters/300l-h-aquarium-internal-filter.html

It looks like ti doesnt hold much inside 11cm, by 4, by 4 approx. But any larger and I guess could be too powerful for fry, but this does look the right shape to fiit into a homemade sponge casing. is it quiet?

I was going to take the parents out after about 5/6weeks and keep the fry in there, so was going to have a thin layer of sand and some java fern& moss on wood pieces (i dont like barebottom look), but at least i can stir the sand up if theres only a thin layer.

Why is it best to keep barebottom if parents are going to be left in there?

SUNSUN Filets?

Every single post of mine will have spelling errors, that one was one of my better ones lol

lol, what should it have been?

Yeah, but mine is an older model. Have a look on fleabay, you might get one cheap. I got this and a small dumpy 55w heater for about 10quid posted iirc.

is the older model the one that is thinner at the bottom? I've checked on ebay and that too shows a photo of 2 different shapes of filters and just says maxi? am i missing something here, does the outer layer come off?

LOL! It should have been filters i should imagine.

aha but whats sunsun? lol

I would consider something like this...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Superfish-Aqua-flow-50-Internal-Aquarium-Filter-0-50ltr-/270784642454?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Fish&hash=item3f0c05bd96

100L per hour and seeing as you're only stocking with potentially 3 fish it would be ideal. It also has a spraybar so there shouldn't be too much flow. If you're planting too then this will help with some of the nutrient control. Also carry out a weekly 20% water change and that would be a perfect little breeding haven imo.

Can't find the aqua one filter like mine, the maxi must be the new version i guess.

mines external http://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/aquarium-1/aquarium-filters/external-filters/aquarium-external-filter-1000-l-h.html

SUNSUN is the company that make all these cheapo filters they all come from the same factory with different names on :good:

Dont forget your overstocking your tank by a fair amount, overfilter is a must and you will aslo need to feed fry 3-4 times a day + poo patrol etc etc...100L jobies not enough IMO

Mine has to be internal, because there is no space for an external (sitting on a chest of drawers!)

How about the Fluval U2 or the old Fluval 2+ (seems both have output of 400Lper hour), realistically probably 300litre per hr, would this be fine?

only reviews ive seen have been on the U2 and it seems silent, which is my main concern, i dont mind about the price either. The other problem I see maybe, is how to fit the U2 in sponge or cover the intakes? ...as it seems quite chunky!

Ah i see, The U series got very good reviews, the old ones can be snaped up on fle bay for pennies mate

I don't think you would be overstocked personally, but everyone sees it different ways I guess. I waterchange 3 times a week in my fry tank, 50% each time roughly. Its not planted at all.

Just had a look at the filter and it is an aqua one aqua flow 1. 200 litres an hour turn over and I have put ceramic rings and a small sponge in the filter. All stats have always been acceptable and there must have been 200 babies in there at one point, being fed 5 times a day. There is also 2 bristlenoses in there about 2" long. I would go fluval 1+ or 2+

Its a case of finding a happy medium as you can't really have the turnover you want without the flow...

2 apisto's need 75L hes going to have 3 adults plus (say 20 fry at any one time that will need feeding 4 times a day) in a 60L?

Its not the litres that matter its the floor plan that is more important. This is a breeding tank, not their main home. A fluval 2+ will be fine.

thanks for your help.

I think I'll try get the Fluval 2+, so that it fits into a sponge, I'll check ebay tonight and see if i can get me one! :)

It may just be 2 parents, but my females seem to spawn at the same time, so depending on when they last spawned it could be 2 or 3 in there. If 3 is too much or they fight alot, I'll take 1 female out. Just prefer to give the females a fair start to attract their man!

will apisto ave about 20fry then? I've seen them with 12/13 in my community tank, but wasn't sure if some had already been eaten/lost.

I'll take a photo once i get it setup!

It would be nice to see the eggs, has anyone managed this? im thinking of making a cave with one side missing and resting it against the glass to see in...not sure if the fish would like it tho

My females love coconut huts. She lays her eggs in the inside roof. Think i counted approx 20 eggs last time bright fire engine red they were. Sometimes ill turn the hut over and have peek for fungus which is a problem around the eggs for me.

Bright red? Wow! I would go with one male and one female in the 60 litre then next time you have a go, use the other female. I am going to try apisto's soon I reckon. Wharf aquatics have got some rarer seen ones in atm.

cocnut shells, what a great idea! then i can just lift it up and sneak a peek! if i buy a cocnut and gut it, do i need to soak in water for long or safe to just put in the tank?

I have a coconut bridge in my commuity tank...but i cheated and bought it with moss. :shifty:
