How often would you advise cleaning an external canister filter?

I presume the OP just has an internal sponge filter, but I'm sure your advice would be beneficial to those of us with an external

Same as with internal filters, whenever the flow drops off. That can be as long as every 6 months with canisters, sometimes longer IMO, if a canister cannot go for 3 months without a clean it isn't realy coping with the load
