If you're not asking it to do anything special then foam is all you need (with or without floss/cotton/wool, whatever you want to call it). If you want it to do more then the first question to ask is why and do you have the right filter for your needs, then you can get into high surface area stuff.
Personally, I'm using a varied mix of whatever came with my filters, some pond sponge pads cut up to fit things and some alfagrog as I have a huge volume sump filter (because I like to mess with stuff), which would be of little use to you at all.
Go with sponge, feel free to play with high surface area ceramics if you want to, you don't need to but some people like to get the best surface area that they can.
