Filter For New Tank

A friend just gave me an old tank he had laying around.
It is about 22 gallons
There is no filter, so I am wondering what type of filter would be good for a tank like this
Is it too small for a cannister filter, or does anyone know of cannister filters for a small tank like this

Otherwise, I may just use an HOB filter, like a tetra whisper or a Penguin Bio filter

Any ideas?

a good second hand Eheim 2013 would do the trick nicely.

canisters do a better job and there are canister options for a 20 gallon but they are more expensive than hob filters. for a 20 gallon if you want better filtration you can get a hob filter made for a higher gallon recommendation that would do a great job too for cheaper if you are worried about price.

Canisters definitely do a better job but if cost is an issue and you are fairly new to the hobby, a good quality HOB would probably do fine. I would suggest an Aqua Clear or Fluval. Definitely a lot cheaper.

I would argue, though you make a fair point, starting the hobby with a "short cut" may not be the way forward.
your stock, in my view, is more important than your pocket.

I respect your view, but I would argue that HOB's are not exactly a "short cut". Some people may view the added expense of a canister is not needed to start with. I have used HOB's for years and have had great results. I now am in need of a canister for my 55gal(US) but that really is because I'm overstocked with Mbuna if you have any suggestions. Currently I'm running 2 Aqua Clear 50's and a Fluval C3 for a month with no ill effects on my water parameters.

Cost is not so much the issue
I have 2 HOB filters for my 10 gallon tanks..one is a tetra whisper and the other is a penguin bio filter
The tetra is actually running in my main tank as a backup

I have noticed that the cartridges for the HOB filters are very expensive
I was wondering if anyone has purchased bulk floss and just cut it to size to fit in the filter because it is 10 dollars for 3 filters for the Penguin

so some like the HOB and some the cannister filters

I will need to continue my search
