Filter Carbon

Hello,

i was browsing the internet when i came across a website that said that carbon was only needed when taking away medication. i was just wondering if that was correct. and if it is, then ould you just put like gravel as a media inside the floss?

If you have carbon in your filter already I'd leave it. It's normally got a good surface area for bacteria. However, the half life of carbon is so short, research suggests it'll only pick up for about 2 weeks max, then it'll just turn into any other filter media. A lot of people on here will only use it after medicating there tank.

so in short, it's not needed.

I agree, don't need the carbon.

Don't know about HOB filters. But in my external filter I have put extra sponges in the trays that should be for the carbon.

some modify their cartridge innards, others change their filter type. as the use of cartridges is designed to make you buy media on a regular basis. even though there is no, real need to do so.
