There's a man giving me two Jack Dempsey's, a male and a female, for free,
I'm picking them up tomorrow during the day.

Last night he moved them from their regular large tank, into a 10 gallon tank together.
He said the female's tail was normal at that point.

But when he got off of work tonight just a few hours ago, he told me that he arrived and found the female's tail badly shredded.
He said it appears like fin rot but that it's impossible to be fin rot because it doesn't deteriorate fins that rapidly in one days time.

He thinks the male jack dempsey had a fit and attacked her and nipped her fin terribly, from being in such close quarters in the 10 gallon for the day.

What do you guys think this looks like?

He said the female is still acting and swimming normal even with the ripped tail, and said that If I didn't want her any longer because of her condition, I didn't have to take her.
I'm not worried on healing her, because I have a hospital tank and the appropriate medications for her, but is her fin damaged beyond repair?

Hard to tell, but i think that male has got a guilty look in his eye :fun:

Does not look good, i would guess its ripped from fighting, however its its been affected is another question, cant see for sure, i would reccomend if at all possible, house it in a hospital tank, if not maybe get that liquid which i cant remember the name  does a wide range of treatments, smells like a mentol style smell...grrrrr its there on the tip of my tongue

Also if it is damaged beyond repair its not the end of the world, ive seen cichlids in worse condition with there tails and manage just fine

My guess is the male was asserting his dominance and that will probably be the end of it now, i have had this before and just left the injured fish, and it grew back its missing scales/fins.

I'm going to guess that same female (bottom one) is in this topic too http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/364312-3-jack-dempseys-need-help-with-sexing/
If it is, she's looking alot better :good:

Yes, that was her in the bottom picture in the other forum, her tail is looking much better. still hasnt grown back alot but i see a little bit a new growth. it's healing. I just took her out of the hospital tank and put her in the big tank to see how she does. my other female Jack that was already in there (and spawning with the male) constantly was bullying her. So I took the aggressive female out to seperate them for a couple days so the new female can get established in the big tank, and then i'll add the old female back in. This was successful with my blood parrots when the same thing was happening once. I read on the internet try to remove the aggressor for a couple days then add them back and see if anythings changed. It worked last time, hopefully it does this time. If not, i'll have to get rid of one of the females :/

And Nelly are you talking about Melafix? I had some Pimafix on hand when I first got her home, it keeps away fungus and bacteria infections so I treated her with that. She did just fine. No secondhand fungus or infection from the wound.

Hard to tell, but i think that male has got a guilty look in his eye :fun:

I think you're right :p
