Feeding Worms To Fish

I'm looking in to a Fire Eel for a new, bigger tank and have read that you should feed them live earthworms. I trust these are just the ones you dig up from the garden. Is there any danger in doing this for the tank i.e. diseases?

Usually it is wise to let the worm empty their intestines before chopping them for the fish(I have kept them in a moist tissue for few days.)
