External Heaters? Any Experiences?

Ive heard that they are really good heaters. I have read that they use electronics instead of a bimetal strip to control temp so it should not fail. They shouldnt restrict flow because after all, its only a heater core in the center with the water passing around it right?

Aye, it arrived, about a week ago. Easy to install and is working a treat, maintaining water temp perfectly. Doubt it would burn out if left on during mantanace, as it says in the manual that it self limits during times of low flow and automaticaly switches itself off when there is no water present :good:

Nice, though rather bulky, pice of gear. Bulk won't matter though, as you won't see it in the cabinet

All the best
can i ask where you got it from?

I got the heater from the living seas :good:

The heater does not restrict the flow of water through. The heater is hollow, with the element built arround the tube that the water flow through. This are actualy widens, thus reducing the pressure and thus resistance through the heater, so no, it will not affect the flow of water.

Yes, the heater is electronic, but that does not make it fail safe  The bi-metalic strip type heaters fail on, cooking your fish due to the way they are designed. Electronic ones fail off, so you notice the tank cooling and get a week or so to do something about it

All the best

I've been using a Hydor 200w external inline ever since the tank was new in Jan/Feb this year. Its been rock-solid on temp and no flow problems at all. I also had an unusual situation where our tank broke and I carried the pump/hoses/heater out to my cold shed (in a spring string of cold nights) and ran my system on a large bucket -- the Hydor was awesome, keeping the water warm despite the cold (of course it was a lot of wattage for a bucket!)
