External Filter?

Hey Guys

I am considering purchasing an external as my built in filter is pretty loud and the filter seems to get dirty very easily.

So far I am leaning towards Eheim as they are supposedly superior in every way, I am looking at the Classic Series, I like the fact that they haven't changed in like 15 years. A 2215 seems like a better buy but it is recommended to have like 6 X turnover (therefore 2217). My worry is that the flow rate will be too extreme for my 37 Gallon.

Also being in my bedroom I would prefer it to be as quiet as possible, my previous filter claimed to turn over 1100 lph which I really doubted as it was a cheap chinese tank.

Any advice would be appreciated

With average stocking and when not planning to overstock, I have never had problems with the rated filter. In my experience, most fish don't care if the rate is 1-2* or 10* as long as there is no ammonia in the water, you remove the crap and they don't struggle against the flow.

That's also the reason I like the Eheim 3e range: the flow rate is adjustable.

pricey tho the pro3e range , classics do just as good a job for a fraction of the cost . i rekon youd be ok with a 2215 , altho a 2217 will be even better . thr flow from the 2217 is pretty strong , but if you have the spraybar at the surface it shouldnt be like rapids in the tank . i run 2 2217s on my 100g and i rate them highly

Seeing as it is extremely likely that I will be getting a larger (55 Gallon+) tank soon it would be more economical to purchase the larger one, I am not sure if the Classic 2217 comes with a spraybar, is it easy to DIY one?

The pro3e range looks really good but like your leica m9 it is out of my price range

Will the spraybar be noisy? My tank now sounds like a bath tub filling up I have become oblivious to it but you can hear it throughout my house at night :\

M8, I can't afford an M9 either! Ah, the benefits seen at the end of student days...

No, spray bars aren't noisy! Just place it underwater, so that the holes point horizontally across the tank. If it's still making noise, push it down by 5 mm. I don't know about the classic, but the 3e came with them. It's just a tube with a cap on one end and a row of 2mm holes along the whole length.

The 2217 will come with the spray bar if it is a new one.

well I still have over 1825 uni days left lol, I might get a NEX-5 soon, seems quite reasonable and compact.

Well.. if you want something, then I can say that my first external was a Fluval 305 and it sucked majorly compared to the Eheims I've had/used. Cleaning was more complicated, needed cleaning more often, the inlet was forever getting blocked, there wasn't that much space for the bio media, always needed de-airing after cleaning... I can go on

eheim 2217 . buy it from warehouse aquatics , best price online for it that i found. it will be the + model meaning it comes with the double inline taps for easy disconnection/maintainence . yes the spraybar and all pipeworks comes with it , along with media .
