This is my first time ever using one. And it has just arrived.
Now setting it up. I was reading the manual. And it tells me to wash the filter media until it runs clear. Should I actually have to do this?

yes. The ceramics will be very dusty and could have spread their dust all over everything else. Always follow manufacturers instructions with these things :)

Except when it talks about replacing filter media every 2 weeks or whatever they say.  Make sure to learn about how to properly clean your filter media.  You never want to throw away filter media unless it's super old and falling apart.

Okays :D I just wanted to make sure it was okay to clean the ceramics as I know not to clean the filter sponge out completely. Or change it all the time.
Thanks guys!

I presumed you would know about changing media by manufacturers recommendations ... but I should have clarified for any newbies reading this. I forget that not everyone is experienced with these things.

To clarify: Always follow instructions on the setting up of filters, the recommendations for different media placement (this depends on the brand and the way they have designed the filter to work) but always ignore the recommendations to change media regularily. This is a ploy to make money in general.

Hopefully that's clear now :)

I've read it all on setting it up. Have it all prepared now ready for when I do my change over. Was hoping to have it running with my cycled filters and cycle it at the same time but I don't want to be cutting the hood to have it fit.

I'll give them a wash then
