Hi everyone, some of us have been discussing the possibility of a pin for example planted tanks.

read the thread here and reply if your interested in including your tank.

link

format will be main tank pic, hardwear write up, fert and light schedule

then individual comments on your plants from your own experience

canoechiq has made a start, here's hers Link

I'm in. Got some new plants coming so I'll get on it at the end of this week.

Just read your PM Jimbooo. Nice idea.

I suppose you could always edit one's individual post when necessary i.e. when you get new plants or equipment.

to be honest it doesn't really matter if it's out of date but it will provide a real life plant database just not searchable.

for example i have riccia in my cube, it is more than healthy when floating but would die if submerged with the lighting levels. no website will tell you that. so for a member toying with the idea of getting a plant they can see an example of a tank with it in, look at the hardwear spec and get an idea if it will work for them.

How about this for a format?

[TANK PIC]

Tank - (dimensions and volume)

Filtration -

Lighting - (type, quantity and photoperiod)

CO2 - (method of injection and quantity)

Substrate - (type, any additives etc.)

Fertilisation - (types and schedule)

Water chemistry - (pH, KH, GH, NO3, PO4, temperature)

Fish/inverts -

Plants -

Followed by a brief summary of plant, algae, nutrient deficiency experiences etc.

I know this idea has been sparked by interest in a plant index and i think its a good idea, but i feel for this thread to be of any real benifit other than a showcase of nice tanks, people must give a detailed spec of the fertilisation regime they are following, amounts, how often etc in order to show how this has been achieved, i think for the thread to be of any use for us all collectively and for other viewers the attention to detail has to be probably more important than the list of plants in the tank itself.

Also i think the water parameters that we all work and live with are equally important, for instance i buffer my water because of low KH, others will have to live with very high phosphate levels or nitrate levels in the tapwater or high KH and GH, there are many permutations that a viewer will possibility be able to identify with from there own areas water and if you can give a details of how you overcome these problems i think that will benifit everybody and may inspire those with problematic tapwater to give planted tanks a go.

Also perhaps another area we could incorporate is algae, what issues we have had with algae, and what do we think caused them, again for others to gain insight into what areas they should concentrate on in order to learn from our mistakes, maybe incorporating algae may be to wide a remit for this particular thread to encompass but its just another idea of how to made the exercise more benificial for the person that may be new to planted tanks.

My *2 Cents* for what its worth

Edit: gf trying to outpost me when im not looking...........

If this happens, it would be nice to have them in a pinned topic, but to have each of us add our own tanks in a post of our own incase things change. That way we can edit it ourselves. Once the tanks are up, the topic could be locked, but we could still make changes.

I could pin the topic and leave it open. If people just make sure they follow the format. I can always edit if necessary.

Does everyone agree on the format I have suggested? I think it covers most aspects, including most matters mentioned by zig.

How about a title? Member's Planted Tanks.

the only thing i would add is a close up pic for each plant if possible then your findings under the pic. this will also cut down the "plant id needed" topics.

pics of non aquatic plants you have unknowingly used in the past would be usefull as well.

the only draw back is the dial-uppers will have a hard time accessing it.

what do you think?

That would be a fun thread, count me in!
