Example Planted Tank Pin

hmmm setting standards for the tank posts would really be difficult.... and if we dont let everybody post their tanks in then it wouldnt be the friendliest fish forums around anymore :(

I agree, but I do understand where zig is coming from. We could have several other categories, for example:

The "Effective use of Bubble-producing Plastic Ornaments" Section

The "Minimalist" section

Or my favorites,

The "Dawn of the Dead" Section or better still the "After the Apocalypse" section.

Sorry, just letting it all out of my system before gf leaves, I have to behave while he's gone. I love a good joke. I love a bad joke as well, and my jokes are terrible. I apologize. I've gotten in trouble for my sense of humor before. Nobody's tank looks like the Apocalypse.

i would like to add a new category planted algae tank section  but seriously ..... the categories should be the answer the the problems ! hehe

Good point on where the "line" is to be drawn on submitting a planted tank for the thread. I thought this thread idea may open a can of worms somehow!

I agree with houndour. I would hope that most members would have the common sense not to post photo/specs of less than well-planted tanks. I would also hope that the majority of the submissions would be from regulars to this section, not just from other members who want to show off their efforts.

Maybe a polite suggestion is the way forward; posted in the "rules" post at the beginning of the thread i.e. "Please only post your tank photo and specs if you are a planted tank enthusiast with the background knowledge to be able to provide necessary feedback to lesser experiences members via PMs if required."
Any other suggestions welcome.

That sounds like a great way to phrase it!

Would it be a good idea to have the age of the setup as well in the format, included with the other specs?

i would like to add a new category planted algae tank section

This is the section i will be entering my tank is a mess at the minute.

Right now my tank looks like the apocalypse.
I would hope that most members would have the common sense
right, done mine. i'll add it to canoechiq's thread for now.
Excellent job jimbooo and canoechiq, now if the rest of the thread would remain just as good quatily !!!!! ................but i fear the worst for this thread im sorry to say that.

You will get entries from people that just got the plants delivered from Greenline yesterday and planted the tank last night and of course the tank will look good and have no algae issues, look at why the tank of the month was abandoned............people were cheating........which leads me to another thing i hadnt thought of...........people may post tanks that are not even theirs :huh:sad but true.

Im sorry for being a merchant of doom and gloom here, but its happened before in this forum, so we know it can and probably will happen again unless safeguards are put in place.

And my origional point still stands how do you stop somebody who thinks that their effort is equally as good as yours from submitting an entry, even though most of us here know the entry is really bad, because i guarentee others will back that entry up, people that dont post here in this section wil back it up, you only have to read the comments in the members pictures section on some really awful tanks that some people think are great :D and then you may get the can of worms that gf spoke about, there will be calls of eliteism etc from the planted section towards other members if it is not made a free for all.

So i think it is a very difficult one to get right, but i will contribute and help in any way i can to make it possible, but i think we need to put a bit more thought into this if it is to work long term without that can of worms being opened in the first place.

And im not trying to put a downer on this idea i just feel more discussion needs to happen first of all before it should go ahead, the idea has lots of potiential as we can see allready from the two entries submitted so far.

But dont forget also that the origional request was for a plant index.

Edit: why does the quotes work sometimes and other times it doesnt........really annoying.......there are other bugs as well.......rant...........

What you have done is fine. A Tank shot with numbers, indicatin species or common names should be fine IMO. :)

Good point Zig. Drawing a line between what one may call their tank planted, and what another may call a fish tank is completly different. This could be a hard point to argue. I say we accept them all.

Too bad if it isnt on a scale of the "Zig/GF/Jimboo" trio. My tank for instance.....i would count it as planted. But its COMPLETLY different to you guys, and thats a positive. It means the stigma of a costly, difficult aquascape is chucked out the window (If not only somewhat :) ) and it alows others to see alternatives and different styles.

What may not work for some, works for others, and that has to be taken into account.

It should be decided that only heavily planted tanks should be used as a point of reference for other members who would like to dive into that kind of a tank, instead of a tank with one or two plants in it.

I don't like to exclude anyone, but the really isnt much point having a tank that has 2 amazon swords and a bit of val. No offence to those tanks... that's where I started. It was looking at the tanks that were heavily planted that got me where I am today.

Because all your quote tags are the wrong way round Zig!! I don't know what you are doing :)

Good point about filling tank with combo selection and then posting.

You're never going to stop people from doing that, but a point could be made that its recommended to post mature planted set ups where the system has run for a few months. This is why I don't want to post my set up at present. It's only been bga free for just over a week so I can't put all my specs and say this is what I get from the following specs...blah blah...

But come on people lets be positive, I think this will work just fine and will be a great source of info and ideas for newbies :)
