Example Planted Tank Pin

My post is quite long already. I think adding plant pics would make it far too long. I have 12 plants in there, and I'm sure some people have more than that.

yeah i have 13 species in total, it will be long but would be usefull for the plant info bit. i do like the way you've done it jen with the numbers on the main pic, that may be the way to go. i would have to do a couple of close ups on the big tank as you wont see all the plants in detail from a tank pic, it's too mature and lots of the plants are entangled in others etc.. wont effect most people though.

I agree that individual plant photos may make the thread too large. I remember at one point my tank had 15 different species! I think one decent whole tank shot should suffice. edit - I agree with Jimboo that two or three closer shots may be necessary for particularly densely planted tanks.

Another point is that if I leave the thread open then people may post questions regarding individual tanks, this will likely result in quite a messy thread.

One solution is to create a "rules" post at the beginning of the thread, stating that any detailed questions should be PM'd to the tank's owner.

If the questions/answers are particularly useful then the owner could edit their post as necessary with the relevant information.

The same principle could be used for posting individual plant photos i.e. sending a PM with the photo to the interested individual.

Does this make sense?

yep, makes sence.

alternatively you (gf225) set a dead line say in a couple of weeks time,we all do our own write ups and pm them to you seperatly

you can then edit, crop etc.. all the replies into a pinned topic.

sorry to burden you with a load of admin but at least the whole pin will be updated at once without replies in between tank profiles.

if any editing is needed the owner can edit their own thread (in the sent items folder in PM) and resend it to you for updating.

comments can be directed by PM as you have suggested.

I just wanted to put in my 2 cents and say that I think providing a link to the tank's journal in this forum would also be helpful. This might help with the questions that other users might have about the details of the tank.

Excellent idea for creating some assemblance of a database! Someone deserves a cookie!

I see no reason for PMing me the photos and specs.

If I set up the pinned topic soon, I'll start off with my (or Jen's) tank as a template. If everyone else follows the same format and any questions from other members are PM'd to the relevant tank owner then I see no problem.

I'll figure out the "rules" properly i.e. max. photo dimensions etc. soon.

I think it would be too much work to ask George to do. Having to post and edit everyone elses stuff. We should all put our own posts in the thread so that we can make changes whenever we need to. Maybe he could lock the post, and unlock it when we need to add. Even that though... we aren't all online at the same time. Georges idea of leaving it open and just posting rules that no replies to the tanks are to be left in the thread. A mod could just go in once and a while to take out the non-info posts.

I don't know if you can give people rights to just one folder, but I would be more than happy to help out with the upkeep of the folder - if that's a possibility. Especially since George is away for a month and a half.

I'll try to behave, gf. But I'm not making any promises. :p I can't speak for the rest of the forum.

 This great little forum is probably one of the best behaved on TFF - especially considering the traffic we now get.

On a side note I'm really happy with the way this forum has progressed in the short time I've become a mod. It is growing from strength to strength and I thank you all for making it such a pleasure to "work" on. Well done everyone

I also think zig deserves a special thank you for all his efforts, especially on the fertilising and algae front. Thanks mate.

cheers gf..............just one question on this plan say if somebody wants to post their tank and it only contains two little twigs or a little bit of vallis stuck in the corner somewhere behind the ornament of the diver blowing bubbles, you know the type of tank i mean, whos going to be the judge that that effort isnt as legitimate as say your own tank for instance, whats going to be the criteria if those type of tanks are submitted to the thread (and whos going to be the judge) and whos going to tell that person that their tank isnt as good as yours because that can be very subjective in somebodys elses opinion even if the tank is rubbish, ive seen some shocking examples on this very forum of what i am talking about, or am i missing the point here.

Maybe we could have a high tech and low tech section. Wouldn't matter if its a high tech 10 gal or 200 gal. High tech is high tech. Some people would benefit from knowing that other people can grow a bit of val in a tank with only the stock lights on it.

oooh this has taken off quickly!!

I'm very excited. I want to do my tank, but I feel like it shouldn't go up as it hasnt been running for very long at its current specs.

Can we post old tank design/pics?

I thought of this Zig. Its a difficult one, and I wouldn't want to offend anybody...but...I would hope that when they saw the quality of you lots tanks they would be stupid to post theirs. And secondly, the idea is to get ideas and to see what people can achieve with their specs. So anyone with any sense wouldn't take any notice of those tanks.

I wonder if some kind of restrictions can be made? Like the tank needs to look half planted...problem is you can have a gorgeous lightly planted tank if you do it right...I dunno.

I wish we could have a planted tank competition, maybe just a yearly one....:) Give us something to aim for :) I'm gutted that I joined after all the TOTM things finished :(
