Hi everyone, I have always kept Oscars. I love them! I have recently decided to try some other fish.

I bought 2 x JD's and a 1 x Green Sevrum, great looking fish! however, im a little dissapointed with personality so far.

Everytime I get anywhere near the tank, they dart off and hide. I have had them for over 2 days now.

When I buy new oscars they are shy for 10mins maybe in my experience.

So my question is, how long will it take for my JD's and Sevrum to stop being so shy. I loved how oscars would snap the food out of your hand! will the JD's and Sevrum every be like this?

Just leave them with light out for a couple of days. They will warm up to you.Jd's might be a bit tough on the severum though

Sevrum is about half fully grown, JD's are babys. So not a problem at the moment, hopefully the JD's will grow up to respect the Sevrum. I have another tank to split them up if it every goes wrong.

So do JD's and Sevrum, come to the surface as you feed them?

Also, while on the topic I am feeding both Hikari Gold Cichlid Pellets twice a day with frozen blood worms in the evening (same diet as my oscars) is this ok?

Yes,they will eventually become more tame.My severums are real tame :good: I think severums like a bit of vegetation in there diet.If you get pellets for malawi cichlids they might be a bit better with severums.

I have had a JD in with my Oscar for almost a year and she still hides from me  I've tried sitting quietly by the tank for an hour at a time, putting food directly into her cave, alas my love goes unwelcomed and unwanted. I finally just accepted that that's her personality and I just have to deal with it.

JD's don't always wind up being highly agressive.
I've got one in my big tank that is on the bottom of the pole below a Oscar and a Texas green Chiclid(Male)
the Texas sometimes goes on a little terror spree and then the oscar will have enough of him and cut him off from the rest of the tank. No actual fighting the oscar will just turn sideways and the texas is scared to challenge the oscar.
They were all added at the same time so due to the oscars growth rate the oscar is easily double the size of the JD and the Texas.

These days you never know what you're gonna get.
Someone else mentioned a Firemouth being very docile yet I ran across one who was extremely determined to take over and kill everything in my tank including the large oscar twice his length.
I had to ruturn the firemouth it must have had some sort of breeding problem in it's lineage and got a high agressive characterism from somewhere.

I had a JD quite afew years back. He wasn`t as agressive as he should have been and put up with afew different fish, but he was an exception to the rule. It didn`t take mine very long to realise where the food came from and eventually would eat out of my hand and jump out and grab food that i held above the water.
He was the fish with the biggest personallity that i have ever had.
Patience will be rewarded
Angel

i've had my Severum now 2.5 years and he's about 7" - but hes a wuss. If i just walk up to the tank he scarpers until he sees the fish food container come out and then hes up to the surface. I have to creep up to the tank ver slowly as any sudden movement and he's off and hiding or swimming round going mental - I know a few people who have the same thing with Severums - very nervous fish on the whole.
