Everyone's Pet Hate About The Local Fish Shop!

unmakred, wrongly identified fish.... I absolutely hate that... it's a bit like this here: research every possible fish you can so you will be 90% sure of the fish you're buying... idiotic personel - yes, this pangasius will be fine in a 20 gallon... I once told the customer that it simply won't be and to google pangasidae... I got told I know nothing lol... bullcrap... lucky for me I had a pic on my phone to prove it lol...

oh yeah and people who can't control their kids and stop them TAPPING ON THE BLOODY TANKS ...

And calm, sorry
As a parent of two preschoolers, and a fish enthusiast, I have come to the conclusion it is impossible to prevent your children from tapping on the glass. Have pity on us parents when you see us in your stores.

The one saving grace I find while trying to persuade people of the error of what they think is an internet enabled phone.

"What's that sir you don't believe me that a red tailed cat fish will grow far bigger than any tank you could comfortabely keep on a kitchen table ... read this." :shifty: and then the satisfied smug grin on my face as their face drops as they realise

I don't usually see kids (well I'm 14 lol, but I don't tap the glass lol)... but it's very annoying in the zoo... I'm watching a chameleon it's nice and qite, it's relaxed, than a horde of screaming annoying little children go blasting in and scare the poor fellow into the backgrond, it's very stressfull for the animal and annoying for the mature observer...

"Look mommy isn't the little fishy cute! Oh mommy can we please get it! Please, please, please mommy!"
"Oh all right, after all the bowl doesn't cost too much..."
_-_-The next day-_-_
"Oh no mommy! Mr. Goldy died!"

Not impossible.. you just fuss at them and tell them to stop.
My brother's fam is staying with us until the house they want to move in is rdy.
They have a now 3yr old and she hasn't tapped on any of the fish tanks. Why? B/c we told her not to and she listened.

Anywho... petpeeve dead/dying fish in tanks. That is the one thing that just drives me up the wall. Specially when you can see that the fish has been dead for a good while.

I also hate it when you're looking through the bettas in the cups.. and all the employees do is just place the dead ones in the back.

Personally I hate petsmart. Hate it. The employees are lazy, never in the fish department, and me and my dad ocassionally play a sick game of count the floating fish. They have nice small pacus that they recommend for fish bowls and all sorts of lovly advice. They told me that tiger barbs will be fine on their own and I learnt the hard way not to trust them. Hell, I've had advice that a half dozen plecos would be fine in a ten gallon tank. Simple economics drives it. Fish die. People buy.

My biggest pet peeves would have to be: Shops that keep juvenile large/agressive/otherwise unsuitable fish for the average person's tank very well stocked in the store at all times with absolutely no fully grown properly housed individuals anywhere in sight. Can we say sharks, common plecos and red tailed catfish? And of course "Oh I'm sure it would be fine!" to any question the staff doesn't know the answer to.

Best experience I've ever had was purchasing a clown pleco recently. The lady in the shop told me that they had ordered the smaller ~2" variety LDA67 but were pretty sure that it was the larger ~4-5" variety (he is, which is exactly what I wanted) and wanted to make sure that I still wanted and could house the fish knowing that it would likely get that big. Considering that most shops will send you off with a common pleco and not even ask about your tank size, I was very impressed.

Wow. Why hadn't I thought of that? It seems so simple. That's the best bit of advice from a person who's obviously never had a child of their own I've ever heard.

Failing the 'ask and child listens'..... gaff tape their hands into their pockets?

(no...... i dont have kids...... yes, if i did i probably woudl do that....... when i was a kid, so would my parents!).....

Children dont always listen *hollow laugh*.... (a trait a great many adults have also)..... what IS frustrating in a fish shop or in a public aquarium is not the children who tap tank glass, get told not to, do it again and get removed...... its the ones who do it and are just ignored - frequently with parents who are off looking at something else anyway. Now I fail to see an excuse for that.

All the other fish shop annoyances...... ditto everyone else really - mislabelled tanks, uninformed staff, overpriced goods, dead fish in tanks...

Ooooo I guess you told me! I should just go hide in the corner and suck my thumb b/c I said something that's just common sense! Not my fault your kids don't listen to you.

Yes yes.. I went there....

Seriously though... whatever...

Another thing that really cheeses me off is when we're looking at the fish... an employee will come and ask if we need any help. We'll say no b/c we're still browsing and all of a sudden.. POOF.. no more employee around anywhere when you're ready to get the fish you want!
I swear it happens every single time we've gone to get fish.

I also can't stand the type that just want you to leave so will say yes to whatever question you ask.
We went to a place called Fishy Business. A fish shop that you would think would be a bit more helpful since that's what they specialize in... bf asked questions and all the guy did was give him generic "Sure" "Uh huh" answers... UGH.

One of my pet hates is when you ask someone for advice, and then perhaps mention the same thing to another member of staff at a later date and you get a completely different piece of advice from the first person.
Most confusing!

I agree Amunet about telling a child to stop and they should listen.
And yes, I am a mum. When my girls were younger, if I told them not to do something and explained why, then they would listen.
Anyway, pet shop peeves, has to be the same as most people and finding fish tanks with no labels. I've been to a couple of shops and ended up having to ask, only to be told that they aren't sure what fish they are!
