Euthanasia of a very small fish

i never flush fish i lways think they may poison something(almost right) . not to mention freezing is bad since the cells freeze slow causing pain .

I euthanased a sick platy once with vodka. The poor thing swam about like it was drunk for a while then went still, but still breathing and ocassionally moving. I eventually took it out even after adding a LOT of vodka. I then used my trusty method of putting the fish in a paper towel and smashing its head with something.

I agree with the smooshing, I just wrapped one of my guppies up in a square of toilet paper (which is pretty much see through when wet, as in you will be able ot tell where the fish is, and then 'bam' with a hammer. Instant, painless death (as if anyone actually know what a painless death feels like)...

what do you do with the clove oil?

Do not freeze the fish, that causes alot of pain, vodka will burn, and flushing is inhumane if the fish is still alive.

Smashing sounds the best idea, get a piece of kitchen roll, fold it in half and put him inside, then hit it with a heavy object a couple of times and then dispose of the fish.

I hope i never have to kill any of my fishies :(

In one of my books it mentions putting it into another smaller container with some water from the tank then puttuing it in the freezer. As the water gets colder the fish will fall asleep before it dies, therefore it wont feel a thing.

The quickest way to do it, I know it sounds cruel but it's a hell of lot less painful. Wrap him up in a towel or napkin then smash him with a hammer. Dead in less than a second. I know some people don't like to do it this way. Depends if you can do it or not.

Just make sure from the water to the smash do it as quick as possible.
I am definately with you. The fastest, easiest (apart from the I dont want to kill my poor fish thing) and most cost effective way to kill smaller fish is to slam them. Sounds unplesant but you know it will get the job done and on the first go.

I agree with the quick smash death. It's best for the fish because it's quick. However, it is probably very, very difficult for you. I had to do that to a little glowlite that was about half an inch long. So, while you're crying afterward, just remember that you were brave enough to make it as painless as possible for your fish.

for most of my "disfunctional" guppy fry i userally feed them to the bigger fish, but if ur fish is ill an dwont get better, you should remove and treat him or euthinize him. for a fry that small i would thing removeing the head would do it, but iv heard vodka works instantly.

my friend usually lets his fish loose in the sick tank and then just.... lets it die on its own then buries it!

Not true, when the blood freezes it expands, ripping through the fishes veins and tearing them, freezing is very painful for a fish

I thought things expand when they heat up, not freeze. But maybe I'm wrong in this case. Anyhow, the best bet is to just let the fish die of natural causes, and try to treat it. For me, this is a guilt free way to do it, since that thought in the back of your mind of "could it have made it?" is never there.
