well i just saw a few minutes ago a video of a tank with light substrate like mine and their boesemani rainbows look stunning, mine look like dull hobos (but i still love em), they are fed/been fed on a mostly meaty diet, the tank's temp is 77-80 degrees, and the only chemicals in it are slight iron supplements for the plants (rival tank has tons more plants than i do) are there any suggestions despite the obvious diet change that i could do to get them to become prime specimens? what type of food should i offer them and what brand would help tremendously.

how old/big are they? Young rainbows do not have much color and usually a poor pattern. It increases as the mature. I feeding good foods helps, like hikari or New life spectrum. Other things like Kensfish.com is a good site for food. Breeding and quality can play a role too.

id say 3.5-4" and they get to about 5" right?

forgot to mention that when i turn the lights back on in the morning they lookk just like the fish on the heading of this site, except the smaller one is more darker then yellow.

They need a diet of at least 50% veg, so you need to supplement the meaty diet with a good quality vegetable food, I use tetra veggie crisps, plus shelled cooked peas, lettuce and cucumber too.

They also need a 50% water change weekly, I do 2 x 50% water changes on rainbow tanks.

cant do water changes weekly because i dont have a co2 system for the plants and in order to have sufficirnt co2 i can only change the water once a month 50%

the meaty/red food is called TetraColor tropical granules.

not doing water changes isn't doing much in terms of adding CO2, if they're doing well now, they'll do fine with the more frequent water changes.
