pleco-1.jpg

im not sure if my high fin spotted pleco is sick or not i tried to get a good pic but its not easy. for some reason at night his scin color gets lighter then what i think is normal. i have search up ever fish disease and nothing matches what i see. it not velvet or itch and wanted to no if anyone could tell me if i should be worried.

plecs can change their colour slightly, so it might not be anything to worry about at all.

No, it's fine. Mine does this as well. Mine normally changes slightly according to activity level, light levels, and other things.

so when it changes to a lighter color does that its from him being more active because it only happens at night. and thank you both for the answers.

Do you think yours may be stressed to?

no i dont think he is stressed out in any way. he is very spoiled and i always make sure he gets an algae wafer and i feed him cucumbers and things like that for a snack. i also put some salt in there for them too.

Most fish fade out in the dark and lose color. Ever seen a Neon Tetra in a dark tank?

yes i have 2 neon tetras but havent seen there color change much!

Maybe he doesn't like the salt? I believe most plecos are not salt tolerant!

Neither are Cories but most low levels won't bother them. Salt used as a treatment - for Protozoan and fungal infections - is effective at 22mg/litre (83.27mg/gallon or one teaspoon per 66 gallons of water) therefore a teaspoon per gallon is not justified and is far too much.

I referenced Fish Medicine (1992, WB Saunders Company) by Michael Stoskopf for the mg/litre concentration and did some basic maths (which may or may not be correct) for the other concentrations.

Personally I've treated Cories and my Bristlenose Pleco in Stoskopf's suggested concentrations and it's proved very effective. :good:
