I would have a pair. When sexing them, females have a splodge on the dorsal fin. Males don't have one.

i have a pair at the minute but wanted to add another pair would this cause major problems

Elliotis arent aggressive cichlids so if you want to add another pair it might be ok. You might get aggression if they spawn though. I'd invest in some coconut caves so they have some hidey holes to escape.
