Please can anyone advise me before i launch this filter out the window!

I just cleaned all the filter pads as the tank was looking a bit off colour and I put it back together it is running fine but this very loud humming noise coming from the top of the filter. I have tried reloading the filter, rattling it, restarting it and this hum will not go away. I have no cleaned the upper part as I do not know how to and I have no idea which eheim this is as I bought the tank off someone over 7 months ago. All I know its an Eheim professional. Help please!

Hi, i take it this is an external filter? i brought 2 second hand tetratec externals i cleaned 1 out and that started humming it turned out that the magnet on the impeller had the most tiniest chip that was causing it to loose balance making it knock and touch the sides i brought a new impeller and all was fine. Hope this helps

Check the impeller it might need cleaning, My pro 2 is the same but it's fine after a good clean. Hope this helps

Could you tell me how please? I wouldnt even know where to begin

Ok just seen where you are on about, took it apart also unscrewed the top and checked the battery part of whatever it is at the top for water. Dried it all and put it back on.

After soaking the whole carpet and myself it is now quieter. However it is very hot at the top. Is that normal?

Thanks again :)

No mine is not hot (just checked) not sure what part you are talking about that you unscrewed :/ Are you sure you have sealed it fully ?

yes it is fully sealed. It is the top bulge part of the casing where it has eheim professional written on. I took apart the lid :) Wonder why it is hot :( Has been like that for weeks

Your filter should not run hot. High temperatures indicate very low flows which will quickly result in damage to your impeller.
Try once again taking apart the filter and thoroughly cleaning both the impeller magnet and the well that it sits in. Clearances in this area of a filter are very tight and any bit of dirt can inhibit proper movement and flows. When you have that part reassembled, try turning it with your finger tip. If it doesn't move easily, you don't have it clean enough. It may not turn far due to the magnetic linkage but it should move easily and smoothly for part of a revolution. Then assemble the cover over that part of the impeller. It will contain the bushing that the top end of the impeller axle runs in. Do not force anything when putting that part back together, you want that impeller to turn with almost no effort except to overcome the magnetic forces. If you get that part right, your filter will run cool and provide just tons of flow.

Thanks for this, I turned my filter off about 30 mins ago and just waiting for it to cool. It isn't very hot just warm to touch, so got all my cotton buds and towels ready for a good clean down. When i took it apart last night I noticed a build up of salt (as I was using salt for a while) so I am presuming it is just a build up of that.

It is silent since putting it back together last night but I don't want it to break.

Thanks again :)

old man is right, hot is not to be expected,
I have a 2215 and I have noticed some loudish sounds but only after cleansing.
Always quiets after a few minuets/ hours and a coaxing of air out.
The impeller, shaft and housing are the only suspect,

seems you have implemented some maintenance , could you please post the results for future reference?
I'm curious as to the cause and solution.
Thanks

I am suspecting a salt/sand build up next to the impeller, i took it all apart, used cotton buds and scraped the sand/salt that had built up off, dried and clean and put back together. Will check later see if it is hot or not. it also started first time and no noise.
