Hi all!

I am probably ready to clean my Eheim 2213 for the first time and wanted some advice. I'm using it in a very small tank (10 gallons) so it is probably not that dirty. The filter was put in use in October.

Other than rinsing the filter pads, do I need to change or rinse any of the media? From what I seen in the other posts here, it looks like the recommended approach is to use tank water to rinse everything with in order to keep my bacteria from dying.

As far as the tubing and outlets etc. is it ok to rinse with tap water and then do a final rinse with the tank water?

When I remove the pads, I'll have to remove the media as well to get to the lower pads. Is it ok to keep the media out of water during the clean up time?

Thanks, Mike

The 2213 is a bit powerfull for that tank isn't it?

Wash the pas in tank water and clean the outlets with an toothbrush that has never been used.

Thanks Miah. It is a little overboard for the 10 gallon. I am planning on moving up to a 30 gallon as soon as I finish the stand.

oddly its just right. 5x+ flow, seems, to be the basic healthy rate. as the eheim runs about 300lph(real) its just the ticket! and, in all probability, it will far out last the others avaliable. its not, however, up to running a 30g

The problem is that its hard to discuss what might be the best flow rate for someone without knowing the goals. If you divided the goals into 4 crude categories of freshwater tropical: completely unplanted fish-only tank, lightly planted, heavily planted Walstad-style, heavily planted high-tech style, you'd probably get people talking about 4 different types of flow-rates. Unplanted and high-tech planted might suggest 10x flow rates, lightly planted beginner might suggest 5x and Walstad-style might suggest only 3x or something. There are multiple paths to success which greatly complicates the giving and hearing of advice I think!

I've had an Eheim 2213 on my 30 gal for the last 3+ years.Never had a problem.

indeed so. i had a Hydor prime 30 on my 50g for three years, and had no issues. only after adding a 2224 as well, did i begin to understand what people mean about 5x or more flow rates being good.

I don't understand. If my water parameters are all consistently good,my water clean and clear and my fish healthy, why should i be looking at a filter with a better flow rate.Perhaps you could explain.(Not being argumentative here, genuinely curious :good: )
