Went to a LFS today that i had never been to before but it was recommended to me so i thought i would give it ago. I asked an assistant about a certain fish and he told me it was an Egyptian Mouthbrooder. He told me they had split the males from the females due to the females having eggs and wanted to see if they would brood them. I really liked them and have had a quick search but can't seem to be able to find the correct information. There were 3 males, one was black and was obviously the dominant one and the females in another tank were pure white. Do these sound like Egyptian Mouthbrooders? Any info would be greatly appreciated. :)

Do a Google for Pseudocrenilabrus multicolour or go here FishCannel . That link also mentions a close repative the P. multicolour victoriae.

For a while I kept another relative of these fish called Pseudocrenilabrus nicholsi. This cichlid is considered, inch for inch, one of the nastier cichlids. You must separate the male and female once she is holding and when she spits you must remove her as well or the fry become lunch in a day or two. In the end my male killed my female, spawned with a daughter and then himself got entangled in fern roots and I found him too late.

No, it is a dwarf cichlid, they do not grow that big. 2.5 inches is more like it- that would be right around 6 cm.

Does the male being black with red ish fins and the female being.pure.white sound.right to you then?

The Egyptian mouthbrooders I have kept werentbthat colour the males are one of the prettiest fish about with gold and blue shimmers on the side

Hmmm... thanks Simon. Seems like another case of incorrect infor from an lfs... Surely a first?
