Egg Crate ....

Well, I was just wondering what you guys/gals think of egg crate... and does anyone use it...

The reason is because I have been going through many Mbuna setups which involve LOTS of rock and I see that most have egg crate. I understand its to spread some weight out but mainly so the rock doesnt slip... I allready got a 4 by 2 foot piece from home depot for about 10 bucks, allready cut it to fit onto the bottom of my tank. Tomorrow my rock will be here and I will see what kind of setup I want... I was thinking of tying the base pieces to the egg crate with some fishing line to further prevent slipage because Mbunas are known for digging......

i used to use it in my marine tank to help keep my LR steady it took a bit to hide it but it did the job.

Also if your concerned about rock slides i used to get a putty that was great for sticking the rock together wich helped me to create outcroppings and such like for my corals.

I was looking at the putty stuff but I dont want to "cement" anything ... I want to be able to re-scape incase I get too many quarrels.... depends how much rock it will be.. says "light weight" and cured but Im still not sure how much rock will 50 pounds will actually be......

I have only used egg crate to frag corals. They work extremely well with the aragonite plugs which fit nicely in the egg crate. Other uses it has could be for some planted tanks and leveling live rock as you said but most people use it for frags. I have also seen some people use it to create their own frozen food by fitting it in the square fittings.
