Ok, kind person at work has brought a fish tank in for me to have in my new office with the staff.

It's a small hexagonal aquarium I am guessing approx 13 G.

The tank has been washed in plain tap water and scrubbed inside. It was filled with a bucket that has contained water mixed with fairy liquid- I have discovered.

The contents are purple gravel and 2 tiny resin logs.

The fish are;

5 penguin fish
1 Red tailed black shark
1 clown loach

My hair stood up on end! Anyone else see anything wrong here?!! :)

oh dear! I hope you got rid of the fairy liquid... um, they're not all swimming around in fairy liquid are they? oh yeah... and the size that clown loach gets, and the red tail shark's territory issues... and that's really not enough room for tetras to swim around in happily... um... oh yeah and you should brush your hair with water to get it down again...

Fairy liquid is classed as a Marine pollutant and even when transported in its original containers over water (by boat) special provisions must apply.

I hope the tank was washed out throughly.

Errr Washing up liquid?

Basically came in as set up was completing- the bucket I saw being used to fill the tank has been used to clean the floors and there was a lot of muttering about the bubbles in the water- people were wondering if it was some residual fairy liquid!!

No dechlorinator... :blink:

Im guessing the tank does not have a filter or heater? I think its safe to say the tank is not cycled, i would advise you put the fish in a bucket and give everything in the tank a very thorough scrub in fresh water to remove as many cleaning chemical toxins that may be in there.
Fill the tank up with some fresh dechlorinated tap water and buy the tank a filter and heater if it doesn't already have one, now you have to consider the fish;

clown loach is going to grow to a foot long and needs 50gal tank minimum to do this, you can take it back to your lfs but then you have to consider that they may sell it to another stupid customer like the ones you just saved it from- finding a friend to take it in may be your best hope or finding a lfs with an excellant reputation.

RTBS is going to need a 20-30gal minimum tank to grow up in and they can become very agressive when older.

Penguin fish, i don't know much about these but they grow to about 2 and a 1/2inchs- 13gal tank should be fine for them.

Surely no-one could possibly think using a detergent in a fish tank is a good idea?! :no:

I agree with Tokis-Phoenix - get those poor fish out of there ASAP!

Eeeep :eek: what idiots. I'd suggest getting those poor fish rehomes asap then giving the person/persons responsible a present of a book on fishkeeping. Damned fools.
Hugs.

So what would you guys suggest using to clean a 55 gallon tank that had previously been used to house a sugar glider?

They're not fish! They're flying squirrel type thingies. Aren't they?
:blink:

My old favourite is to wipe the tank down with a weak methylane blue solution, rinse with fresh water, then wipe down with vinegar and then rinse clean. Kills the bugs and shines the glass in one fell swoop!

Obviously people, the problem here is these are most definitely not MY fish! They belong to a work colleague and are on loan to the office.

I am going in tomorrow with a bottle of stress coat and a jug!

The next thing I can think of doing relatively easily and without causing upset is adding some more decor to the tank- at least then the clown loach and rtbs won't be rowing over the one little log to hide in.

I can't try and 'pinch' any for my own tank- I don't think the neons would appreciate these as tank mates!
