So, I am in a position where I have a 6 gallon cube lying around spare. I would like to look at the possibility of keeping a Dwarf Puffer in it.

Will this tank be large enough for a single DP?

Would a sponge filter be sufficient or would I need to use a small internal canister? Do they prefer low or high currents?

Is a sand substrate ideal or just leave the bottom of the tank bare?

Planting suggestions?

Does the tank have to be set up for brackish water or do DPs prefer fresh?

What about feeding?

I know I will need a regular supply of snail shells, which are kindly being donated by my Banjo Cats & Raphaels :D

Is there anything else I need to know?

Cheers in advance guys and gals :good:

Will this tank be large enough for a single DP? yes for one

Would a sponge filter be sufficient or would I need to use a small internal canister? Do they prefer low or high currents? big filtration with these they are messy fish, i have 20* turn over in my tank

Is a sand substrate ideal or just leave the bottom of the tank bare? sand is good

Planting suggestions? dense with lots of caves (coconuts are brill!)

Does the tank have to be set up for brackish water or do DPs prefer fresh? tehy are 100% freshwater

What about feeding? live foods only or freeze dried at that or frozen, black worms are good as are bloodworms but they wont eat flakes. theyll eat snail smaller than their eye too!

Is there anything else I need to know? only keep one! and make sure you have decent filtration and it stays on its own, no tank mates, and massive filtration, did i already say that? wel you get the idea, oh yeah, heater set to 25oC :)

Cheers in advance guys and gals :good:

I second truckasaurus' advice

Good luck with it - DPs are the coolest little fish I have ever kept in 15 years! You must RESIST the urge to put a second one in that tank!

When buying your fish don't get one that looks like this

This means they aren't feeding or have Internal Parasites

Get one that's good and round

A worm cone is good

All the advice you've been given is great. Just 1 in a 6 gallon tank, definately freshwater, lots of filtering, 50% weekly water changes, plenty of plants and caves for the little chap to explore and you'll be sorted :D

Oh and worm it when you first get it as most DPs come with IPs so it's a good precaution. Also, get a snail farm going for rmshorns and pond snails...not MTS as they are too hard:D
