Finally some movement!

Day 7 (classing changes made last month as a reset)

Ammonia: 4ppm
Nitrite: 5ppm - pretty much off the chart

Only took the nitrite test for the first time today, wasn't expecting anything. Think my initial dose of ammonia may have been more than 5ppm seeing as it isn't dropping?

It will, just keep an eye on it. The ammonia change moves along a lot faster than the nitrite change, believe me! Just be patient. Things will come along. Just use this time to dream about how you want your tank to look once you are able to start stocking it and all.

More strange readings!

Day 8:

Ammonia = 4.0ppm (Still no change)
Nitrite = 5.0ppm
Nitrate = 5.0ppm

Seems strange that nitrate is already climbing yet ammonia hasn't budged?

Are you sure that the ammonia was correct before?


You could do a massive water change to clear the decks. Then redose to the proper level and watch it from there. It's possible that you grossly overshot your target. Remember that the 1ppm processes to 2.7ppm nitrite and 3.6ppm nitrate. So, even if you dosed at 8ppm or so, then it could be down to 4ppm, and has processed to over 10ppm nitrite and 12ppm nitrate, easily.

Are you dosing everyday with 4ppm ammo? What kind of test kit are you using and how old is it?

God, i wish i hadnt found this thread, im in two minds what tank to get as a grow out tank for cory fry and i think you helped me make my mind up. Such a simple setup! Sometimes i think these planted tanks are just a mess :\

Ha, now you've got me thinking, to plant or not to plant??? Will have to put some in to keep the fish happy I suppose

So, finally hit 0 ammonia, just redosed to 4ppm (hopefully )

Nitites and nitrates are both through the roof so may have a water change to do tomorrow!

To answer questions, this is my third ammonia dose, original dose, then new dose when I started over, then redosed tonight. I'm using the API test kit, lot number ends 0810, assume that's August 10.
