It never rains......

Ive had my heaters turned off on all my tanks for the last few weeks, since before the heatwave, as all tanks sat at a 26-28c.

Noticed they were starting to drop yesterday, so switched them all on, didnt bother to check the temp they were on as I hadnt changed the dials on them, just unplugged them. Big mistake.

My fry tank, which I dont turn the lights on until midday normally, was beyond 40c, I assume it had heated up to that overnight, I presume faulty heater, but its only a couple of months old.

Needless to say, most of the fry were dead, there is about 12 still looking very poorly, not that they had much colour anyways, but they are almost see through, not eating etc, I immediately did a water change, vaccuumed alot of bodies or bits of bodies, it was disgusting, so the few remaining I moved to my endler tank, seemed the safest bet, I now dont know what to do for the best, I dont want to lose the few I have left, but I dont think there is anything I can do, will they recover now the heat is back down or will there little bodies not survive this?

Ive had enough this week, losing the mother, now the babies, frankly I dont want to carry on, I feel like rehoming all the fish and selling all the tanks.

Obviously Im now paranoid about all the heaters in the other tanks.

Oh no Minxy, it is awful when this happens. I suffered two massive losses last year and that almost made me give up but I'm still here! I think it was my climbing perch and reedfish that made me carry on.

So sorry for your losses, I hope that you can find something to keep you going in the hobby.

If they don't make it you'll know in the next 48 hours or so. Don't quit on them until then at least. If they last that long and take to eating again, they'll probably be fine ie. full recovery.

oh no :-(

that is such bad luck,i realy do feel sorry for you.

im sure the remaining little guys will pull through, but like said above, the next couple days are going to be very crucial.

please dont give up. if it wasnt for you like i said to you in the pm, i wouldnt have all the nice fish and tank setup i have now. Realy you are my mentor so to speak, lol

who else would i pester with all my random questions, lol

You can't give up! They were sent here to test you :shifty:

You have to pull through this, then round the corner someone will be selling the most amazingly conditioned female to replace the one you lost.

She will wip your male into shape. And they you'll have more fry than you can shake a stick at!

Well ok that might not happen. But you've got to just think of this as a blip. Things will balance themselves out somehow. :) Chin up.

Awww hun, never give up, these things are here to test us... and i know your strong enough to relise that random accurances can never be blamed on anythink other than pure bad luck... you seem to be having more than most at the moment but things will look up i promise ;).

Hope the fry pull though hun and i have everythink crossed for you.

I am sorry to hear your sad news Minx, I had the same thing happen around 12 years ago. I had a pair of Oscars in their tank with the heaters off, and I did the same as you, I turned them on and basically boiled my O's. I was gutted they were a breeding pair as well. 1 14" and the female was 11".

Don't give up though, as heartbreaking as it is, from the posts I have read on here you are a very good fishkeeper and just made one tragic mistake. Good luck with the left over fry, I have my fingers crossed for you.

That's real bad luck, but don't give up. I have had things like this happen to me, and whilst it does try your patience and resolve, it also makes you a better fishkeeper. You will learn from this and I bet it will never ever happen again.

:-( SO sorry it just has not been your week. I think by doing what you did you will have saved a few of them. I really do everything is right they are in clean water they should be ok. Fish are pretty tough and can live throw some big temperature changes. I'm going to be optimistic and say that they will be ok.

Don't even think about giving up. Your good you know your stuff and you love your fish. So your the perfect fish owner. Don't give up on your fishies they need you. ;)

How awful, same happened to my kribensis fry. I did get survivors

Im sorry to hear about your bad luck - its really gutting when you really care for your fish and you lose them.

Its never a good idea to turn the heaters off in a heatwave - there really is no need as they are regulated and will not come on if its warm anyway. The biggest mistake is people forget they are off and when the temp drops they dont realise!

Im so sorry for your losses :(

please don't give up though; you have such great knowledge and you are an inspiration to us all.

Take care and try to relax. Try not t =o get paranoid about the heaters as well.
