At this point I nearly feel like giving up altogether.. have been cycling since mid march already!

I tried contacting someone who lives close by and is willing to donate mature media, but they might not be on this forum anymore, since I never got a reply. Can this be done by mail I wonder? Or will the critters die if you seal them up in tupperware for a few days?

Have you got a good LFS? You could try talking to them and asking if you can pinch some.

The bacteria won't die on the way home as long as the media doesn't dry out.

It is very easy to post mature media by post, just seal media up in a bag/tub with a little water in and post in a jiffy bag by 1st class post then pop into your tank when it arrives. simple.

Having shipped plenty of media, Floyds mum is on the money. Bag the same as fish, 1/3 water 2/3 air. As long as temperatures remain reasonable, no freezing or beyond 100F, mature media has no problems with a few days in transit.

Where abouts are you located anyway....?

Also, if you have been cycling that long, just out of interest, what are your readings?

can we update the media list?

i have pm'ed and still not beed added to the list.

This is a good idea, I looked on there when I first started and couldnt contact anyone. I have now cycled my tank and have added extra filter pads (roughly 5cm x 10cm) and would be willing to donate

I have yet to find a LFS which doesn't reply to my question with, "We do sell some "bacteria" in a bottle!" Everywhere I ask I just get told to purchase some of the safestart or other similar products.

If one were to take this filter media, is it actually viable to just drop it in your tank on the bottom until your tank starts cycling and then donate the same pads to someone else? Or is it likely the colony will diminish?

I thought id found someone in the same county as me (Fife) in scotland but sadly there no longer active on the board :-(

Thanks everyone!

Stuuk1, I am in UK, Cheshire, somewhere between Liverpool and Chester. So in case there is someone close by who's willing to help out I would be very grateful!
My Readings in the first post of this thread. My tank came with a not so good powerfilter, I can see that now that I have put in a brand new one, but I had no idea to begin with. I have a child with special needs who has been needing extra looking after lately, so I cannot spend as much time researching things as I would have liked. I have a shop close by, but I really haven't been able to get to it because of family circumstances. Maybe this weekend if my son feels better. I am not too hopeful, though, I asked them before about cycling the tank, but they said all I needed was a dechlorinator

Now added, Ian. Thanks for volunteering.

Stu, if you let me know your location, I'll be happy to add you to the list also.

wow. i volunteer!!! Upstate, NY.
be happy to help get your tanks going :) a bit to go around! and disease free (unlike some chain stores) if possible, inspect the tank the media came from for disease. if the fish are ill, dont take it.
cheers

Upsy Daisy im local to you, sunny northwich, just down the m56 from you :)

i can pop round with some media if you need some tomorrow afternoon?

just send me a messege with your postcode and ill get round to you as soon as i finish work, or failing that, if your busy i can always pop some in the post for you?

Gosh, I don't even know what to say.. Firstly, thank you so much for being so willing to help out a complete stranger, but really I would feel too guilty that someone came such a long way to deliver something that I needed.. Maybe via post?
Thanks again!!!
