I started this hobby in end of march beginning of April. I think I have spent over 2000 bucks in less than a year (9months)

I purchase all my tanks brannd new, so that is major chunk.

Expensive hobby.

I voted 2000 - 4000, 4 tanks running and three of them bought new from lfs. My biggest expense other than the tanks/cabs/hoods was Live rock for my marine, its £14.50 (about $25-$27) per kilo and I have 18kg.

Starorbs gave me idea to start post with his petsmart question, my gf is looking at me like damn.

And to think I want 125 gallon next summer, better find used one huh?

Yer second hand is the way to go. I have promised myself that I will stop buying tanks when I have my dream 8' x 2' x 2' Tank

See the problem is I am terrified of purchasing second hand and it falls apart on me. Also, in my area you see alot of second hand small tanks. Plus I hate aseing dingy looking stands, I want it to look nice and neat, so I purchase new :dunno:

Easily over $4000, i spend around £1000 ($1800 dollars roughly) each year just on food, water conditioner, salt and other consumables.

Lets see, each week I buy around £10 of frozen/live food £520 a year, 1 x 25l RO water £3.50 (salt premix once a month £7.00), £224 and around £5 a month on flake food, £60. All together, £804 roughly $1447 OUCH when you sit down and add it up it hurts

Currently running 9 tanks with a total volume of around 475 gallons and thats after closing two down recently to try and lessen the load before i either move house or move the tanks into a seperate fish room, once you start getting into the realms of changing 100 gallons or more of water each week things start to get expensive.

You mean each year .

I started a long time ago[ 1970 something ] fish keeping and since that time , I've probably spent enough to have a funded a sizable IRA . .

I didn't vote , sorry , I'm afraid if I kept track of what I spend between my sons and myself I'd conclude I couldn't afford fish keeping as a hobby , and take up golf or something , maybe even work more    .

fish food [about $ 25 a month ] , water conditioner , supplements [ for plants ] , meds , remedies , water and utilities , oh and then there are the fish . $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ :X

I meant total, but you tell us what you want us to know, and what your mind is willing to except
Well if it's total , it's gotta be way more then 4 grand , so in that case I voted .

I love the hobby way too much to think about what I've spent , who knows if I had funded an IRA instead , I might not have to work now , cough , cough , yeah right , wake up  .

My boys learn a little about biology and chemistry , aside from taking care of pets as a responsibility, we do it together , it's worth it to me .

I'll tell them that when they're ready for College and I have no funds for tuition

:dunno: " boys we had fun with the fish didn't we ".

Anyway it's been a whole lotta bucks Oh  .
