The quoted figure was for a densely planted tank, obviously it's hard to determine but it's unlikely that the uptake values on low tech set ups will exceed 1-2PPM per day. If you wish to further read this check it out on the Barr Report.
OP - Try to keep the lighting consistent, fit a timer so that the lights are on for about 6-8 hours a day, having 2 small photo periods isn't as good for the plants as one long one is.
