Do These Items Work

No grimmy, they are a waste of time. You don't want to use chemicals, instead you want to do water changes, healthier for the fish. The plant food does work though.

The aquasafe water balance does work, as does the plant food, the waste disposal is useless, it attached to the waste and makes it sink basically, it doesn't remove it or do anything else with it unfortunatly. I used this product myself once and was so disappointed I wrote a letter to the head office of the company to complain.

What does the water balance do? I didn't read it, but thought it was the same as the waste control.

The evidence for this stuff is pretty sketchy. There have been several detailed threads that go over the stuff, search function should find them pretty quickly. However, I will re-write one of the best examples of the harm something like the EasyBalance stuff will do: A member set up three tanks with guppies. One he did his usual waterchanges and maintenance, one he just left alone, and one he used the EasyBalance per the instructions. They all got fed the same, same lighting, etc. as much as possible. The tank with the usual maintenance was very healthy, the guppies spawned many times and he had a tank full of fry after 6 months. The one where he did nothing -- no water changes, no maintenance, also was pretty healthy, the guppies spawned a few times. Not as much as the well-maintained tank, but still pretty normal behavior. The guppies in the tank that used EasyBalance never spawned once. Now, guppies are the rabbits of the aquatic world, if they are not spawning, something is wrong.

Obviously, this is only one single example, and isn't conclusive, but I also don't know of any study to conclusively judge the product.

Ultimately, getting new water is gold standard, there is nothing that can replace that. The fish will be so much healthier. And, it is so much closer to replicating nature. That is really why I keep an aquarium, to try to bring a little slice of nature into my home. Water changes are at least attempting to mimic the conditions in nature, they certainly aren't close, but they are much closer than dumping a bottle of chemicals into the tank.

There is no substitute for regular maintenance and water changes. Easy Balance is just the lazy way to keep fish. I've tried other types o plant tabs and they didn't seem to do a lot for me. As for the waste remover, there are already bacteria present in your tank that do that. Where do you think ammonia comes from? It is created when waste is broken down (I know that a good percentage is also emited through their gills). No need to pay good money for something when you already have them.

That was a rhetorical question? The ammonia comes from bacteria in the tank breaking down fish waste and other debris such as dead leaves. What I'm saying is that your tank already has waste removal in it and there's no use to spend money on something that is useless.

Grimmy, none of those things, with the exception of the plant tabs, does any good. There are easier ways to do water changes, with minimal cost.

A cheap garden hose with a sponge on the tank end makes for a long distance siphon when you run it to the bathtub. A garden hose adapter makes it so you can attach the hose to most any sink. A cheap plastic utility clamp makes it so you don't have to watch the tank end.

For something around $15 you can do water changes while you watch tv. No buckets. This is the setup I use for the 65 gallon in my living room, with a gravel vac every other week. The vac takes a bucket. One bucket every two weeks, I hate lugging buckets if I don't have to.

I'm going to do that, thanks for the idea! I was going to buy a gravel vac that attacheds to the sink at my LFS for 60$. o.o
