got a rena 60L tank nearly ready, just waiting for a filter to arrive from ebay.

we want to keep a few gold fish and was wondering if i have to so the nitrogen cycle for them? noob question i know!

thats all for now but expect a whole load of questions from me very soon lol :)

excellent forum btw, look forward to be part of the community.

thanks

What type of goldfish are they.
You can only keep one in that size tank as they are massive waste producers.
Goldfish are hardy so yes they can go through a cycle if there healthy.
Also you need double the filter size to the tank as there massive waste producers.

Goldfish (not including fancy kind) are very hardy and you could do a regular cycle with the fish in the tank but to do it properly will require a lot of water changing and would likely be unpleasant for the fish.

I'd recommend a fishless cycle every time, but it's your tank, your choice :)

thanks for the quick replies

in that case then i might just go for tropical fish then?

ive not seen any that i want yet, still very new to this.

whats the best first tropical fish to go for? i don't really mind having just a few.

its not a big tank

ive ordered a 300L/H filter for it. have i ordered too small?

Do another thread on tropical fish for your tank size.
I would suggest a fishless cycle as cycling with fish is cruel in my opinion.

You could have a great little community in a 16G/60L tank. There are endless possibilities. You could pack it with some easy to grow java ferns for lots of green and then have a whole shoal of some particular type of tetra and you'd find it would look really striking. But that just one small idea out of hundreds.

There's a bunch of easy water chemistry that will take you about a month or more before you can have fish and during that time you can have more and more detailed discussions with the members to help you focus in on what fish will be just right for you.

Start by starting to read the pinned articles at the top and start your new tropical thread when you start having your first questions. Tropicals require a heater, but in general they can actually be easier in many ways than goldfish.

Hi,

I started off fishkeeping with a similar sized tank to yours and a fancy goldfish without doing a cycle first, and I have to say it was the worst mistake I ever made. Goldfish are massive waste producers. You would be surprised by how much waste even the smallest goldfish can produce. I tried my best but I couldn't keep up with the water changes and my first fish died of due to bad water quality.

Whether you go with goldfish or tropicals, I urge you to do a fishless cycle first. Not only is it kinder on the fish, it is much less stressful on the fishkeeper.

For a tank that size I would recommend tropicals over goldfish. You could keep one fancy goldfish in a tank that size, but no more and you'd probably have to upgrade the tank to a larger size as the goldfish grows.

If yuo had tropicals you would have a mucher wider choice of fish and can keep a greater number.

Whatever you decide, fishless cycling is the the first step, so read up on that, start the process and then start researching the kind of fish you want

In a situation like yours Biggy7, I would go to the local fish shop, LFS, and look at what they have available. I am sure some of the fish will appeal to you and your own tastes. If you come back and let us know what you like, there are lots of people here that will help you design a stock list around your favorite fish. If you choose one that is not a good idea for a new fishkeeper, most of us will try to suggest a similar looking fish that would work for a new tank and a new fish keeper.
