Hey guys! =) i recently built a pvc HOB overflow for my 55 gal and when i suck on it to start it up a really pathetic flow comes out of it. its just like a small stream i cant find out what the problem is my only guess is that air is leaking somewhere but i cemented everything and have a check valve on the tubing where i suck. the pvc is 3/4 inch. Help is greatly appericiated. Thanks in advance =P.

Could be that he's set up a system with a bleed off on the top of the overflow with a check valve on that tube, it's what I'd do.

If that's the case then the usual reason that this sort of thing happens is that 3/4 inch pipe can carry a huge flow through it, and left wide open it could empty your tank in seconds, so there isn't enough water going down the tube to maintain the syphon.

Assuming the first (and there are methods of plumbing those into a venturi on the return so that the syphon autostarts after a power cut) have you got a valve closing down the flow on the overflow so that it can hold some water in the overflow section itself to maintain the syphon properly?
