Currently we have 4 white tubes and 2 blue tubes on our vision 450 which works fine for the soft coral s we have. We did start off with 8 but it just costs to much to run them and replace the tubes.

Its coming up to the time where we need to replace the tubes again and I'm giving serious consideration to making a DIY LED unit as are electric bill is stupidly high (and I don't have a couple of grand to spend on aquarays or the like).

The actual building of it im not overly worried about (I'm fairly handy with a soldering iron but sure I will still have plenty of questions) but I have still not seen anywhere a decent guide on how many LED'S you need per sq ft for a full reef system. Was planning on using the CREE led's (unless there is anything new on the market in the last month or two).

It doesnt have to be equivalent to twenty 450w MH units just has to do for softies, LPs and maybe the odd lower light SPS and BTA later down the road (could maybe add in extra spotlights for these if needed).

Too half answer my own question I have seen it written that 28 of the new Cree XPG LEDS is equivelent to a 250w MH.

Can anyone confirm or deny this? If so I would need at least 56 of them + Drivers + PSU (probably butcher an old PC psu)so rough price of around £300

The new XPGs are more powerful but the issue you will come up against with 56 of them is coverage even with wide lenses I suspect you will need more. other wise you will end up with spot lighting in effect. The LEDs need to be between 2 - 3 inches between them to avoid spotlighting.

I considered LEDs for my next tank build but I dont think it will be a viable cost option at aroud £1000 I am looking into a T5 LED Hybrid build to keep the purchase cost down 6 x T5s and 20 - 30 LEDS all controlled through a computer for sun rise sun set simulation the tank will be 48lx30wx24d
