Diy Easy To Make Aquarium Filter

Just thought I'd share this simple and easy to make(and cheap) aquarium filter I made.

It can be used as a bio filter, or a small refugium.

Big pat on the back for "doing it yourself" ! The only thing I would add is that "bulkhead" connectors would make a neater job of the pipework !

I had toyed with the idea of a "tupperware" filter myself, and struggled with the water-tightness aspect... didnt occur that you could leave it open

Thats neat! What keeps it from overflowing in a power out...I don't really understand that concept to being with, having trouble working it out. I really like that its above the tank though. Seems easier to get the water into the filter...

It can't overflow. If the power goes out, the pump stops sending water to the filter. The filter will drain a little water until the water goes under the drain tube. The filter only holds about 1/3gallon; and if the power goes out, it only drains a very small amount to the tank(down to the drain tube on the side of the filter). It probably only drains 1/10 gallon to the main tank if the power goes out.

Ahh so the drain tube is at the top of the filter....that makes more sense. Cool, I'm definitely keeping that design in mind next time I try a DIY filter. Thanks for sharing!

Well, not at the top, but a little above the halfway mark on the side of the filter container. Shows it in the video, the drain tube is the one I drilled and siliconed into the side of the container.

If it was on the very bottom, the filter would drain to quick, and not stay full enough for the media to all get and stay wet. If it was all the way at the top, you would be at risk of the filter overflowing. You want it about 1/2 to 3/4ths up the side of the filter container.

I LOVE YOU! Well, not like the gay kinda love. But i have been trying to figure out how to get water from the tank into a filter on top! Now, i have to find a tube big enough for my internal filter!

I like your design. Very simple and reliable and something that anyone can do with the proper ingredients. I made a DIY fluidized bed filter out of a piece 3 inch pvc and some caps and play sand and a powerhead. It turned out well enough for a DIY and performed it's job.
