Discus

If you buy well bred high quility disucs they can get 6-8" But the average discus will be around 4-5" depending on the sex. I think you can fit 8 Discus no problem in a 90Gal tank you don't need a 120 Gal for 8. The 1 fish per 10Gal rule is a good for discus.

My discus are in a 80gal community tank that is a bit over stocked right now. All my fish are healthy and happy. They are outgoing don't spook easy. In fact my 2 year old daughter has been known to hit the tank. The discus don't even move. They just look at her as to say "Well where is the food"?

People make these fish out to be so needy. Saying they have to be the only fish and don't do well with other and so on. IME they are very much cichlids. Just a bit more peaceful then some. I would not keep discus with larger bossy fish like my uarus. Other fish that are peaceful or have the same temperment would be fine.

A 55 Gal is the smallest tank I would put a group in. 5 discus in a 55 gal would be ok. Your tank sounds too small.

I find these fish are not any harder to keep then my other cichlids. Most my discus are reject LFS fish. I buy them skinny and sad looking. I have had good luck getting them in good health, but they will never be show quility. I have been keeping cichlids for 3 years now and other fish for 10 years so maybe thats why I have not found them hard to keep.

so say if i go for 8 discus' 24 cardinal tetra's corydoras are a bit hard to find around here plecos are common but not an option clown loachs are gettable but ruled out i've seen hillstream loaches @ my lfs will they do and leave out everything else just 8 discus and 24 cardinals in a 120 doesn't that look overcrowded??

sorry i have no idea about discus' so

thanks

When people are recommending a 90G or 120G tank for these they are meaning gallons so a 90G would be about 350 litres - 4 foot and a high tank or 120G is about 500 litres - 5 foot tank. Just to make sure you aren't getting confused between litres and gallons.

nope i got it that they mean gallons i ordered for a 89 gal tank it might be coming sometime around friday so now for the specifics

width of the tank is 6 feet
height is 2 feet and length is 1 feet

so how many discus can i put so they can fully grow in this one

Good length tank although could do with a little more wwidth 12inch is very slim

I think you should concentrate on getting the tank set up and settled before you think about discus, maybe have it running for a few months with some harlequins or something at the statr then maybe after few weeks add corys or some tetras and get the discus if parameters are good afer a few months. To rush in would be detrimental to the discus and to your wallet!!

well 6x2x1 is a weird shape maybe but that is the only one i thought would fit in my living room

well @ simonas

if i up the width to 18 inches will it be enough and i already got 1 fully settled tank filter i put 1 in my oscar tank so if i use that won't it do?? i put it there intentionally so that i could remove it and put in my discus tank

pls reply soon my tank glass is @ the workshop and is going to be put together in a few hours

thanks

the 1ft wide will do its just it would be far better looking as a tank and more beneficial to the fish to get slightly wider

hey guys can i put denison barbs with discus insted of tetras maybe 6 denison barbs??

my tank is home it's a 134 gal [w = 6ft, l= 1.5ft ,h= 2ft] well i know it is quite enough for the densions and discus individually but can i put them both together if they are compatible??
and what kind of plants can i put in i was thinking java moss

denisoni barbs are lovely

I would personally go with the smaller tetras only cos the discus may feel more comfortable with them rather than the bigger dfaster denison barbs

Only probably I could for see with denison barbs is that they are low-mid temperature range. But with proper acclimation they should be fine.
