Discus

I've heard that these fish are difficult to keep and not for beginners. Obviously I'm not ready for them yet (though I think they are possibly the most beautiful tropical fish out there) and was just wondering why it is they say they're not for beginners and what their special requirements are?

Good question mate, i'd like to know what the idea tank requirement are aswell. As i'd like to keep a breeding pair in my spare tank but trying to get more info on them first!

They're lovely aren't they! My boss first qualified as a Marine Biologist and he's gonna get some soon I think. But I guess with that qualification that does make him experienced lol. All he's said to me is that the tank needs to be very deep.

I have never kept them myself but I have to agree they are an amazing species. I remember thinking about keeping them in my early days of the hobby. But after some research I decided not to they are quite demanding. Do believe there is a small write up on them in the species index in this forum.

But they are amazing Fish so graceful and regal looking, One day when I have the funds and space i will start a discus tank.

im hoping to set up my 1st discus tank in a few weeks time and from some research ive been doing its seems to be that as long as basicl requirements are met they are not as bad as reputed to be. im still researching and learning so im in no way claiming to be an expert . so far from what ive read it seems that a lot of people fuss these fish more than they actually require . i cant remember which site it was ( ive been on so many discus sites last few days) but it said that whilst it is a fish which is not forgiving of mistakes as long as their basic requirements are met they are not actually soooo hard to keep alive.

only tips i can share ( and i must say this is from reading NOT experience) they like a higher temp than usual around 30 degrees c . they must have excellent water quality but again this doesnt seem to be that much extra work imo. i have been advised that a partial water change every 3 to 4 days is sufficient and that they should be acclimatised slowly.
other than that im still reading learning and asking questions on here. there are some very experienced discus keepers on here chek out the hew world cichlids section im sure they will be happy to advise you better.

if all gos well i may well do a journal with it

to be honest i am thinking about buying two blue snakeskin.. i am not allowed to have another tank + i think i would lost concentration on my main tank.

it is possible. all you have to do is keep ur community tank is clean as possible.

One word "WOW" that is one fantastic looking tank you must be very proud :nod:

That back ground is stunning, I love the way you have planted it as well I hate it when there is a mass of plants. Fantastic fish and such a clean tank my compliments :good:
