Good to hear the babies are doing well, I'd love to see more pics :good:

Have you ever tried earthworm flakes/sticks? They are more similar the food they would eat in the wild. They enjoy eating it also.
Beef heart is often fed to discus in order to promote good coloration and quick growth. However there is some concern over the long-term consequences of feeding discus a diet high in mammalian protein.

I have heard this before but i am actually unsure of the problems to there health, i have been raising some discus on beefheart/bloodworm/dragonfeed pellets and flake and the others I fed the same without beefheart and I saw no difference in a 6 month period. So i started feeding them all the same food and they dont seem to be any different.

Maybe a longer test period would have been better ?

Hi
Chris.... i was doing water changes on babies every other day but have just upped it as their growth seems to have slowed so now doing 20% daily with the odd miss and adults i do 30% every 4 days.
Beechey.... i want to grow them to nearly adult to see what their colouring turns out like and as these are my first babies i have become quite attached to them, there is one that has hardley no peppering on him at all so i shall definately keep him.
As for the beefheart i make my own that is mixed with fish, spirulina, lecithin(helps breakdown fat)and garlic (a recipe i got from holland discus web pageholland discus)and it is fed once or twice a day as part of a varied diet with tetra prima, brine shrimp, beefheart flake, tubifed worms and high protein granual.

Hi Chris. Unfortunately I don't have any hard data to back up my claims that beef heart damages Discus, I am just stating what I have read and have been advised. I gather it is less digestible and can damage their organs if constantly fed this, imagine all you ate were steaks- it tastes good but it cant be good.

For many many years Discus breeders have been feeding Beef heart with good results, I cannot argue with this. All I am saying is that these fish are very unlikely to eat beef heart in the Amazon and I prefer to feed them foods more similar to their natural habitat-i.e invert . I use a beefheart based mix with my fish- I feed them it twice per week, just don't limit them to this food. In the wild they are opportunistic omnivores and their diet consists of invertebrates and plants- they chew the substrate in search of food a lot as well. Cow is not usually on the menu ;)

Again I cant go against years of experience, just feed a varied diet-not dominated by beefheart.

A varied diet is def the way to go, too much of a good thing is no good for anyone lol, but beefheart is full of the protein they need as a part of their diet and i always take care to trim off the fat and veins(it is a horrible job  so i make loads squash it really thin and freeze so i can easily break chunks off for adults and just finely grate some off when its frozen for the babies ) .
Agreed they don't get beeheart in wild as cows dont swim in the amazon lol, but nor do they get tetra prima or tropical flakes.

I totally agree, i dont expect that many cows fall from the trees into the amazon, lol.

A hugely varied diet is definately the best way to go, that way there are no dependencies formed on certain foods.

If only i could eat steaks everyday, life would be good

there has been some strange goings on in the breeding tank this week i thought i must tell you about, after they ate their eggs again thursday i found the ceramic breeding cone on its side in the tank, the water flow is not strong enough to knock it over and this hasn't happened before so i put it upright came down this morning and they have knocked it over again and layed eggs on it, can't think to life of me how they managed to do this i am completely puzzled.

The young ones are looking good Angel, coloring up nicely. Cute lill things ain't they

Strange them knocking over the cone, they must want it that way. Maby more eggs and fry will come from it being like this? I am sure you will have hundreds of little ones soon

The adult in those pictures is beautiful, vivid colors!

angelmouse,

Wow, your babies become bigger and getting better colors. It is nice to see.

Finally I got some eggs from my 2 Albino Angels. They laid eggs last Thursday. This was their first batch and unfortunately they turn white on 2nd day and didn't hatch. But I got another batch yesterday almost exactly a week later even the time of the day. And the Mom is constantly fanning them. And I saw about 30 of there must be 300~400 eggs(maybe more I can never tell how many eggs) turned white during the night. But rest seems ok. We'll see if I get anything hatch in next day or 2.
Hopefully I have good news soon. we'll see.

NEONCORY good luck with eggs, white eggs have been my biggest nightmare lol,it wasn't fungus growing on eggs like i first thought but the eggs being unfertilized or dying, i cured it by turning filter flow down while they were laying so they could be fertilized better and useing almost pure r/o water as my tapwater is really hard. i also found they turned white when i had a cage over the eggs as the parents couldn't get close enough to fan them so circulation must be an important factor. keep us updated
I have just had my polleni lay eggs today but they usally eat them so not holding out much hope
regards Angel

Thanks for the wish. Unfortunately, the 80% turned white and some start to fungus also. So I say this batch is no good either although Terry is still fanning. I feel kind of bad for her that she worked hard for last 2 days.
I am hoping this is just because their youth and they are not fully sexually matured and as the time goes on they can manage to hatch the eggs. And it only took them exactly a week since their first spawn to the 2nd spawn. So they can try few more weeks before I do make some change. But I will ask people who done this before in my area to see if our local tap is good enough for Angel eggs to develop and hatch.
I hope it is not water since it would be a shame that I need to take the eggs from them. Since they seems they are good parents for at least first 2 days. And they seem get along well also. And I did grow them from quarter size and they are over dollar size now but this is their 2nd try only so I know they are young.

Anyway, I'll see what I can find out about our tap water. Anyway, I'll catch you later.

any new pics??

my discus is still not eating bit is some how still alive  touch wood
