I don't know Discus that well, but a point about your 1 / 10g rule - you say min tank is 55g, but i would say more becuase of their large size (or just a more square tank?). if i had discus in my 55g tank, i doubt i would be able to do a 50% water change without them getting grounded!

Averange discus get to be 5.5" not that big yeah some can get to be 7-8". But the average is 5.5-6" they are round but flat so they don't take up that much room. They are tall. A 55gal is fine for 5 discus you could do a 50% or more wc. The fish will deal with the low water. Some people do 90% wc on their adult fish. This just means the fish has to lay on it's side for a little bit. It's really no big deal. A little stressful but they get use to it.

If you want a larger group of discus then go with a bigger tank.

When I was thinking of Discus, I was told by some specialists that roughly 1 fish to 10 gals, so in my 55 I could probably get 6.

Though 1 "cowboy" suggested I go for 8!
