just recently i have found pictures of discus tanks on the internet with large plecs in . i was told these fish are'nt very compatable. i would like my tank to have a amazonian feel so the adition of a plec would be good but only if it wont harm my discus . does any one keep both fish together ?

The reason for this is that some plecs could stick onto the discus thinking its a smooth rock as they have smooth surfaces. i have kept Queen arabesques and bristlenoses with my discus and never had any problem all discus owners wiht plecs there tanks that i know have had no problems. i think its just a myth it could be possible but i dont think it would happen. what kind of plec where u thinking of adding?

i dont know where to start. there hundreds of plecos L001 to L400 so i really dont have a clue!

go on www.planetcatfish.com

get a pen and paper, go through them all find ones you like and dont get Huge like 2ft lol

o yea, when you on the site clik the big fish then youll see at the top "Cat-eLog" 3rd one across, then click "L numbers near the bottom :) and broswe through!

Some plecos will attach themselves to the discus when searching for food. They do this by accident, but once they acquired a taste of the discus slime coat, it's hard to get them away. This usually happens if the plecos are not fed well with various types of foods. Animals seem to know what they lack in their diet and will look for it. Just make sure you give your plecos a good varied diet and you should not have any problems.

yup,i keep normal plecs with my discus no probs :good: .Although i have heard many myths of plecs sucking onto there sides i have never seen it.Maybe it's only when they are rearing fry and have an extra slime coat?

From the stories I have heard it is the commons and larger species that cause problems. I have had Queen arabesques and bristlenoses in my tank also and they are fine. Avoid the larger plecs and be ready to remove them if you see marks on the discus sides.

I read bristlenoses were the main offenders, I think the truth of the matter is - if they're not fed correctly, they'll get hungry - whatever species they are.

I also read you're more likely to have probs with gold nuggets as well - but TBH, as others have said - feed the plecs, they shouldn't bother them. I imagine the main probs would be if the plecs were expected to live on tank waste and algae rather than their proper diet.

I think concluded you can keep plecs with discus if you feed them well... :good:

Not a myth. It's sometimes hard to avoid. I had a shy, slow moving discus that has scars from my pleco. I used to think it was the otos, but after removing them (otos), the marks still appeared on my discus. It still happened, no matter how well I fed my plecos (L-018 Gold Nugget & L-260 Queen Arabesque). I eventually gave the discus away to someone else. Unfortunately, it started happening again when a pair of started spawning. The pair stayed to one corner. And when discus spawn, they start excreting extra slime coat, which my pleco got a taste of. I eventually removed the pair and placed them in their own tank. It hasn't happened to any of my other discus.
