Disaster!

i just bought 6 neon tetra (got given 8) and let them aclimatise and then let them out into the tank. i left the lights off for 30mins but then had to have a look. when i turned the lights on one of them was in the bettas side (divided) once i moved him back i was counting and could only find 6. after a while of looking i realised i should check my filter because they are the smallest fish ive ever kept. i quickly ran to get all the stuff and opened the filter, they were both in there but one had his tail and most of his body taken off by the impeller but he was still trying to breath =(. the other seamed fine but when i put him back in the tank he was swimming on his back all his colour was gone but still trying. i have never euthanised a fish before but the one with the missing tail needed it but i did managed to , i am felling very bad about this, i should have remembered how bad the filter was and the holes in the back (elite stingray 15). but the good news is the other one is now swimming with all the others and all his colour is back cant even tell which one he is.

im guessing you put him in cold freezing cold water to kill him?
or some other way?

i put him in a plastic bag and squashed him, makes me feel realy bad

its okay!!! you have now learnt from your mistake and wont do it again.
after all you put it out of its misery ... thumbs up for doing the RIGHT thing

My Husband had to do the same to one of my blue eyed rainbowfish this evening. I think a lot of members would have advised you to do it like that, rather than to put it into freezing water. I can`t tell you not to feel bad because I always do.

in the past 2 weeks i have lost 2 suspected heavily pregnant platys , my other fish seem fine , their stomachs were very swollen , but never saw any gravid spot , would anyone be able to tell me why this may have happend ?
