Originating from a stock of 3 males and five females in 1995, (sorry, I'm repeating myself)... I cannot say how many generations it took to get to the uncountable numbers of Guppies I have today.

Contrary to expectations, (untill about a year ago), all the best traits seemed to have been instilled into the fry and I trully had super (hardy & healthy) Guppies, which everyone commended and praised for looks as well as health.

With my "new" setup in the "new" fishroom, (having moved to a new house), I transferred about 50 Male Guppies from my ponds (where you cannot see the fish) to the tanks in the fishroom and I was very disappointed with what I saw.....

The deterioration in quality is obvious and the colouration seems to have stabilised to a dull grey-ish (and splintered) tail and much smaller body structure than what I displayed a year ago.

It seems like it is time to sell feeder guppies to get rid of my current stocks and start from scratch (doing only selective breeding).... This was a 15 year learning curb for me.

sorry to hear that ludwig....

new house, new fish room, new stock. should keep you busy :fun:

That is a shame Ludwig. I have seen the pictures of your former fish and they were gorgeous. Is there something very predatory around the ponds where they are now living? It may perhaps be a defense mechanism to allow the males to survive by making them harder for a bird or some similar predator to spot. I know lots of research has been done that shows guppy males quickly adapting to changes in predation. It often only takes a very short time, like 2 or 3 generations.

Here is a photo of my current stocks... notice the ripped tail structure and lack of colouration in the tails... a clear deterioration from what I used to have.
