I forgot the real name if this so i am calling it buy the dumb name the store gave it. I just got one 3 days ago... it wont eat anything i tryed fish flakes freeze dried blood worms and putting them close to him on the bottom. Please give me a few tips. I really like him but he wont EAT!!!

Have you tried frozen food? I somehow feel that fish would rather eat a live fish rather than flake / freeze-dried food...

Looked it up on Badmanstropicalfish - they like earthworm, tubiflex and fish cut up in strips... also they apparently eat when it's dark...

Ill try frozen foods. My local pet store isnt getting them for another week so thats kind of a problem

Another issue with that is im only 12 and like my parents dont really wnt frozen worms in the fridge lol...

Maybe this fish isn't a keeper after all? Its tank requirements seem a little steep... I mean if you really want it, then there are always ways to keep it - but often people get into fish inadvertently that are more trouble than they are looking for... Can you try feeding it a piece of raw fish? How about beef-heart cubes - come in the same format as frozen worms from the LFS and not as shcoking to leave in the freezer...

You could try some small live ghost shrimp or worms, most fish won't pass those up. If you can get him eating live or frozen foods, you'll probably be able to wean him off gradually onto a pelleted or freeze dried diet. If keeping strange things in the freezer is a problem for your parents, get some raw frozen shrimp from the grocery store and try cutting those up for him. Also, go back to the store to find out what they were feeding him and if he was eating any of it.

You told me he was only 2 inches so mabey so large feeder guppys or brine shrimp? If hes bigger, maybe some goldfish?

Goldfish are quite possibly the worst thing you can feed to any fish, poor nutritional content and loaded with parasites and diseases. If you must use feeder fish make sure that you use a small fish like feeder guppies or minnows that will fit easily in the mouth of whatever it is doing the eating, and make sure that you get them from a disease free source, preferably breed your own.

It's most likely a Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus), not a Violet Goby (IME, the gobies usually go under a name like "Prehistoric Dragon Eel.") Does it look something like this?

When I had mine I had great success with getting her to eat the beefheart cubes--another frozen food that most chain stores seem to carry. They find their food largely by smelling it, although once they recognize it they'll go after it as soon as they see you drop it into the tank. Mine would also eat soaked Sinking Carnivorous Pellets.

Bichirs do get fairly large though, so tank size is an important consideration.
