Hope someone can advise what to do with fish & pond at the bottom of my daughters new residence, (Abingdon, Oxfordshire)We are worried about toddler, and, we have an unwanted pond with fish, Koi Carp,Gold Fish.
Any sensible sugestions, (dont even know how to feed them)

:hi: are you asking how to keep them or how you can get rid of them?

Welcome! Nice to see someone else from Abingdon ;) I grew up over there!

OK, how big is the pond? Is there a filter on it? Exact numbers of fish?

Toddler safety: fit a metal grid cover which is locked into place.. you'll probably have to DIY it.

If you are really determined to not keep the pond, then the best option is to sell the fish (try forums, Goldfish Bowl in Oxford, Maidenhead Aquatics, Nottcuts, Tesco), then fill the pond in.. this wont work if the pond is there because of a natural spring, of course ;)

The fish will need some sort of pellet food intended for koi and goldfish.. feed only as much as they will finish in 30 seconds with no leftovers (I think in winter they don't feed as much because of the cold).

find a local fish shop in the ellow pages or online, and see if they will take them. saying that, aren't koi supposed to be worth something ?

Your best bet to dispose of the fish without killing them is to find out when a local fish club is having an auction and simply sell the fish there. A fish auction is a fund raiser for any club, so outsiders who have things to sell or who want to buy are always welcomed with open arms. My own club in the US will be holding our next auction in mid-January but don't rely on us for a date. We intentionally avoid the date of other nearby club auctions to maximize our own return on our sales. The koi are fine without feeding during winter months because their metabolism will be reduced to almost nothing. Below about 10C, people with ponds do not feed their fish. Instead they wait for spring thaws.
Our links to local clubs are here and may help you find a local auction where you can reclaim some of the value of your koi. The koi are quite valuable during any season where people can move them to their own ponds.
