I was told by the staff at my local pet shop that if I just add Nutrafin Cycle when i set up my tank that it should be ok to add fish in 48 hrs. The booklet that came with the tank seconded this. Is it OK?

Imo NO, please have a read of the articles at the bottom of this post in my signature.

Well yeah it will work if you want your fish to DIE! as the Ammonia burns the fishes gills, eyes and scales till they cannot bare it any longer and become unconscious from the pain, they will not wake FORTUNATELY.

I am afraid it is not that simple if you select the link below for "beginners resource centre" then read the Nitrogen cycle, Fishless and fish in cycle sections things will become a little clearer.

The Nutrafin cycle that you mentioned is close to useless and is definitely a waste of money.

Sorry to be abrupt but we see this all the time here on the forum but you have the advantage that you found out before starting a tank and it will save you time, money and the fish :good:

Thanks. I'll definitely get some ammonia.
The Nutrafin Cycle says on the bottle that it is a concentrated solution of the bacteria needed, but I'll still do the fishless cycling. Thanks :good:

It will not hurt to use the Nutrafin Cycle at the beginning of your fishless cycle.

The Nutrafin cycle bottle may say that but just consider and you will understand as you learn more and more about keeping a tank that one has to be very careful to ensure the well being of the bacteria you will culture through a cycle which ever you choose. The bacteria will mainly live in the filter foam and ceramic tubes in your filter but not exclusively so at maintenance times one must be careful to clean the foam etc with tank water and to not scrub so hard as to clean it all away they are something to nurture so one has to ask how can useful bacteria live in a bottle?

Anyway I babel on your Nutrafin Cycle will do no harm as it will do next to nothing I got my money on Nothing at all. :good:

I brought one of these bottles when I first started but I was fortunate like you to find this forum and got the low down, You have made a wise choice and I promise you you will never regret it

ORidout, do you know anyone who has a current tank setup already? If so you can always "borrow" a small part of their filter media which will greatly speed up the cycle.
