Hi i recently bought a 60 litre tank for my two red eyed puffers, my fish shop doesn't supply pure ammonia for a fish less cycle, so im planning on getting 2 barbs are the hardy and fast so will be fine in my puffer tank. i was wondering if any one knows how much room 2 barbs need. i planning on either getting 2 tiger barbs or 2 iridescent barbs.

P.s. The tank has heater filter and everything in, ready to be cycled.

P.p.s The tank is 30 cm high 30 cm wide and 60 cm wide, thats the glass not the plastic bit on top as well

Cheers patrick

If you are in the UK try Homebase, Wilkinsons, boots for ammonia much better than cycling with fish in the tank

Do you not need special fish tank ammonia?

Any will do as long as it has not got perfume's in

Boots do there own brand its kept next to the household cleaning products im using Kleen off ammonia

EDIT

This is what the boots make looks like

tanks fine 4 barbs- if u want to do a fish cycle do a fish ccle its completely ur own choice, as long as u keep on top of water changes there wil be little cruelty to fishies

Oh ok thank you I will nip round tomorrow to see if i can get some

Cheers

please do not keep tiger barbs in a group of less than 10 and even then they will be aggressive to all other tank mates, i find

Ah theres no need to worry jazz my Mam bought some ammonia from boots like the picture above, so i am doing a fish-less cycle.

My question now is to Bojangles i managed to get the ammonia its exactly the same as your pic but my question is how much do i put in ?? :blink:

The tanks 60 litres, ive never done a fish-less cycle before.

I agree, it is the individual's choice, but shouldn't we be recommending the fishless cycle as it's far more humane? You make it sound like it doesn't make any difference.

Wrong! There is scientific evidence to suggest that even very small amounts of ammonia can do long-term damage to fish. It may not kill them straight away (although with a fish in cycle, this is always a strong possibility), but that certainly doesn't mean it won't do any harm.

Pattthecat12, please consider a fishless cycle if at all possible. Fish-In cycles invariably have a detrimental effect on the long-term health of the fish. :good:

yea i have said before that I AM doing a fishless cycle
I just dont know how much ammonia to put in.

dont quote me but i think 2 raise the ammonia to 5ppm its about 2.5 ml of ammonia for a 60l tank :)

as for the barbs they wouldnt have survived a fishless cycle anyways i think they are very sensitive 2 ammonia so wouldnt have been really any use 2 u :)

Thanks jen I will add it in now, i heard something about getting it to 5ppm but i wanted to b certain

Thank you

Sorry, i must have been typing my reply when you posted.

Glad to hear you opted for the fishless cycle! :good:

I can show you how to work out the ammonia required:

Your tank is 60 litres = 60,000ml

you want to raise the ammonia level to 5ppm (parts per million), so;

60,000ml / 1,000,000 x 5 = 0.3ml of pure ammonia required, so;

Boots ammonia solutions are 9.5% from memory, so i'll calculate on that basis, but you should check the bottle.

0.3ml / 9.5 x 100 = 3ml of 9.5% ammonia solution required to raise 60l of water to 5ppm

Hope that helps you. :good:

Thank you Backtotropical i had already introduced the ammonia before your reply and i added 3 ml just by chance from adding drops at a time releasing it wasn't working and adding 3 ml. Lucky fluke but the ammonia is at 5ppm all i have to do now is wait.

Thanks eryone.
