Hello,

Just an update on my cycling log.

Tank 80x35x37.5, 105 Litres,

Day 1 : Tank setup with nutrafin cycle added
Day 2 : Found forum and planned to do a 'real cycle'
day 3 : PH level 7.5, 5.8ml of amonium added to raise it to 5ppm (not tested to check the amonium level)
day 4 : Waiting for test kits to arrive - PH level 8.0
Day 5 : Waiting for test kits to arrive - Ph level 8.0
Day 6 : Ammonia 4.00ppm, Nitrite 0ppm
DAY 7 : Ammonia 4.00ppm
DAY 8 : Ammonia 4.00ppm

I will test the ammonia levels tonight and fingers crossed, I will see a drop :)

Thanks for reading and input would be nice.

Day 9 : Ammonia 4ppm - Seemed ever so slightly lighter in colour but maybe the lighting in the room

Note : 7 days since Ammonia was added and no real change detected so far.

Testing will continue, I just hope I see a change soon :)

Thanks for reading and any feedback would be much appreciated.

At 5 to 7 days after you first added ammonia, I would be a bit surprised to see any response at all. Try testing every other day just to avoid so much frustration. This is a slow biological system we are working with.

Day 12 and still no change in Ammonia level at all.

Will continue to test until I see a change.

Thanks for your time.

PAINFULL

Hello everyone,

Today I thought I would test my Nitrite and Nitrate levels and to my suprise it seems like I have some bacteria working my tank!!!!

Here are my results for the last 4 days.

Day 14 : 12x plants added to fish tank
Day 15 : Not tested
Day 16 : Ammonia 3ppm-ish
Day 17 : Ammonia 2ppm, Nitrite 3ppm, Nitrate 10ppm

How is the tank doing in terms of it's cycle? What should my next steps be towards cycling the tank?

Thanks for your time.

I think the plants are eating the ammonia...

Do the plants produce Nitrite/Nitrate?

Just went to 'Pets at Home' and to my horror discovered that nobody in the entire shop actually knew what cycling a fish tank properly involoved. The 'Kid' serving me was horrified when I told him I added ammonia to my tank to create 'good bacteria' and insisted I started again adding a fish.

Don't think i'll be going back there again!

I don't know about that, but I do know they "eat" ammonia. And in some cases produce it too (if they have dead leaves)

Plants do use ammonia, but also use nitrite and nitrate, so you probably do have some bacteria in there now. As Fishblast said, they will produce ammonia if they rot.

Did they mean you should put fish in now?? When there's ammonia in there? Or that you should drain it, refill it, and then put fish in? Either way, you're right to ignore them.

Test your ammonia levels again tomorrow, and if they've dropped a bit more, then dose the ammonia back up to 5 ppm. Here's a link that will take you through it step by step. It's really informative:

Hello everyone,

Good news, my Ammonia dropped to zero :)

I put 3ml of Aammonia back in the tank which should take me to 3ppm. I am now working with 3ppm as I will be putting a few fish in at first (Approx 4-6 to start, then adding more after a few weeks.

I wonder how long it will take to go to zero again :) Interesting stuff this cycling business!

Thanks for your time and reading.
