Did you place the filter media from the original filter into the new one? If not, you just started cycling all over again.

Great, the old media wouldn't fit..I was told that it shouldn't take long to re-cycle.

Dang. That really sucks.

Whoever gave you that advice... don't listen to them anymore. The vast, vast majority of the cycle bacteria live in the filter. That's why we have filters. You never really cycle a tank, you cycle a filter.

You should basically treat your current situation as if you had just started from the beginning. Prepare for an ammonia and nitrite spike just as before. Keep up the water changes. It hopefully won't be quite as bad as before, as there will be some bacteria available for colonization in the gravel and decorations.

modernhamlet how do you know that whispher has a reputation for cheap filters? Thats not true at all I use it for all my tanks and I've never had a problem with it. In fact its the best I've ever used. Just because you might have had a bad expercience with them doesn't mean everyone will.

Well, It's been a week with my new filter and my ammonia hasnt gone back up yet and my nitrites are finally at zero. I think my tank has finally cycled and getting a new filter hasnt effected that, yet anyway.
